A.3 Ugly by Robert Hoge increases inclusion by encouraging the worth and dignity of people who look “different” and people with disabilities. Characters with disabilities are very much underrepresented in books today #is445
A.2 Taking Flight increases the diversity of the lib. coll. b/c it highlights the life of Michaela DePrince who was one of only a handful of dark-skinned ballerinas. She also has a skin condition called vitiligo which causes white patches and spots. A truly inspiring story #is445
A.1 Nonfiction books can help achieve equity in library services by being diverse and global resources. By representing the diverse population you are serving with your collection, staff & public learn more about diverse groups & can set about creating an equal environment #is445
A.1 nonfiction/informational resources for youth can promote equity in the library collection by making it as diverse as possible, which means that the resources will reflect the lives of all children accurately and comprehensively #inforesources#is445
What are the specific criteria that need to be met to ensure that effective #kidlit and #YA lit nonfiction/informational book/resources both sparks the interest of children and leads to understanding and acceptance of different cultures and perspectives? #inforesources#is445
A.3 Awareness of our intersectionality leads to awareness of the diffrncs and similarities among us and the characters in a bk and we begin to view the experiences of those characters as valid experiences worthy of being read and shared. #is445
#is445 A2. The Family Book by Todd Parr. It depicts (among others) families with two moms or two dads. I went to the Amazon reviews and read the one star reviews calling this book “a blue pill” and one with “a homosexual agenda”. I've read it to my son and had no objections.
Families by #SusanKuklin is a great example given by @somers_kristin of a diverse book that is important for students to read to gain different perspectives of different families #is445
A.2: The book Families from #SusanKuklin presented some potentially controversial material. This book offered a realistic, diverse take on family structure that our society needs to see. These are OUR families. This is how WE look. #inforesources#kitlit#YAlit#is445
A.1: My understanding of selection vs censorship of is that selection is choosing materials for someone while censorship is choosing materials that should be kept away. Selection puts more trust in the reader and censorship assumes the librarian knows best. #is445
A.1 Selection is when the librarian chooses bks that rep. different points of view, and supts the curriculum and the reading needs of Ss. Self-censorship is when the librarian refuses to purchase a bk for a collection out their own personal rejection to the content #is445
Thinking back to @Susankuklin’s visit to our class this week. It was so good to hear how she keeps in contact with the people in her books! Can’t wait to read her new book “In Search of Safety: Voices of Refugees” coming soon this year! #is445
Just had a wonderful visit from @susankuklin to our #is445 class. One of my favorite things she told us was that if you give a child the right book, they will blossom. Thanks for visiting our class Susan!
