@CeceBellBooks Thank you so much for writing El Deafo! Both my son (10) and I adore this book and we are loving your in depth chapter videos! I am studying to become a school librarian at UIUC and El Deafo is my top recommendation to kids and adults alike! ❤️
I think that giving youth a forum for critical conversations is equally important to providing the diverse books to expand their experience. I'm glad you brought that up. #is445
A.4 Clarifying 1st amendment: Exposing Hate: Prejudice, Hatred, and Violence in Action by Michael Miller discusses differences between “free speech” & “hate speech.” Important info esp for YA readers to spark critical conversations. #IS445#inforesources
A4. I could use this pathfinder as a guide to make sure that all of these different diverse family structures are well represented on our library’s shelves and fill any gaps I find. Students should have the resources to freely learn about these differences. #is445
A.3 Ugly by Robert Hoge increases inclusion by encouraging the worth and dignity of people who look “different” and people with disabilities. Characters with disabilities are very much underrepresented in books today #is445
A.2 Taking Flight increases the diversity of the lib. coll. b/c it highlights the life of Michaela DePrince who was one of only a handful of dark-skinned ballerinas. She also has a skin condition called vitiligo which causes white patches and spots. A truly inspiring story #is445
This idea of seeing yourself reflected in books as well as learning about others is key to building empathy for others and feeling accepted yourself. #is445
A3. Trevor’s Story: Growing up Biracial tells the story of a boy with a white mother & black father and his experience in a multiracial family. This expands the representation of family on the library shelves so kids can see their own family portrayed. #is445

A2. When Mum and Dad split up by Lesley Ely increases the diversity of a library collection because it is written by a British author and because it represents a diverse family structure, divorced families. #is445
A1. By promoting books by and about underserved groups, we can raise their visibility and help people who identify with those groups find resources that reflect themselves. This may encourage more people to engage with the resources and services of the library. #is445

This is an excellent point

As an extension - how do you learn the background of the reviewers that you do read? I'm not sure there is a good way to know what groups any particular reviewer would have insider knowledge of, unless they were very well known. #is445
A.4) One of my concerns re: effective #KidLit & #YA#InfoResources evaluation: finding reliably diverse review sources. Even professional reviewers miss issues w/ titles written outside their experience, so relying on White, middle-class, etc. review sources is not ideal. #IS445
A4. My concerns surround the question of age-appropriateness. As a school librarian, what sort of guidelines are you given to evaluate age-appropriateness of topics and specific titles? What tools are at your disposal if your selection is challenged? #is445
@jules_at_work I read this book a few months ago - it's in graphic novel form, which is an excellent inroad for tweens and teens. I thought it was well done, but I also lack a cultural insider point of view so I can only recommend it from my she/her/hers perspective as a learner. #is445
@KimberlyTuskey Yes, one of the reviewers said it would be difficult for children of this age to understand a same sex couple but in my experience parenting my son, he didn't blink an eye when he found out twins in his preschool had 2 dads. Just accepted it as a fact.
A3. Self questioning and intersectionality allows you to include choices that both mirror your experience and contrast with it. This allows a diverse book selection. #is445
This is a great example of a controversial book. The best part about such a controversy is that it gets people talking and the climate crisis can definitely use more attention. Such an important book! #is445
#is445 A2. The Family Book by Todd Parr. It depicts (among others) families with two moms or two dads. I went to the Amazon reviews and read the one star reviews calling this book “a blue pill” and one with “a homosexual agenda”. I've read it to my son and had no objections.
