@JoyceCarolOates If roughly 25% of the U.S. identifies as evangelical Christian, or just Protestant, that would be close to 100 million believing in the rapture, right?
@deray It is an effective strategy that got effectively demonized by the right. Whole language includes phonics, but it also includes attention to the story and context. It was a reaction to an overly focused-on-phonics strategy that preceded it
@deray You don’t need the teacher to assign homework to give your kids extra practice. The teacher is responsible for the 7 hours of school. After that, it’s up to the parents to decide what the kids do.
what happened to Kilmar Abrego Garcia? Where is the outcry still? Some days, I just pretend it's not that bad and then I wake up and am appalled by what we're accepting as reality.
@ellieAPR@rpondiscio A 4-day school week, with teachers still attending on Friday for collaboration and grading, seems ideal. School could still host students for daycare needs, enrichment, and remediation, with teachers perhaps teaching a one-hour session and the rest handled by support staff.
@Beanie0597 Students are in school 7-8 hours a day. That’s enough. A little homework on top of that, sure, but kids SHOULD be able to play sports, participate in activities, or just relax. Why are we so eager to teach them do so their job and then take work home and do more?
@BusyBibliophile@MattRKay That’s a good point. But maybe I’d want to know. (My kids are grown now.) I’d rather it be in the open. But I’d also want to make sure they weren’t trying to persuade students, and would make sure my kids could guard against that. It’s tricky for sure.
@BusyBibliophile@MattRKay I appreciate that. But I see almost everything as politics, or see politics in almost everything, and think there’s a monumental difference between stating a belief and trying to persuade others to share it.
@ReneeOlsen70 @heymrsbond But we tell students what we think all the time: about literature, about writing, about citizenship, about ethics, about education’s importance, etc. it’s a very fine line between much of that and current U.S. politics.
@BusyBibliophile@MattRKay But do we consider a political opinion? Just presidential candidates? Being against book banning is a political opinion. So is pro-education funding. Where’s the line?
