Today, Syria commences the first transitional justice trials of the Assad regime, including Bashar al-Assad, Maher al-Assad (in absentia), and Atef Najib. Najib notoriously oversaw the torture of 13-year-old Hamza al-Khatib in 2011.
Mine for @TheAtlantic on being snatched off a Baghdad street on March 31, beaten, blindfolded and ziptied, and spending over a week as a hostage in handcuffs and in pain from multiple rib fractures sustained the first day.
Alhamdullilah I am out now and healing. And I still love Iraq, dearly.

Amjad Youssef, one of the main perpetrators of the Tadamon Massacre, which was discovered almost a decade after it was committed by the Assad regime, has been arrested.
An estimated 300 civilians were killed during the massacre.
I am and will always be incredibly grateful to those who worked for my release when I was held hostage by an armed faction in Iraq earlier this month.
So many people – including but not limited to government officials, press freedom organisations, and my wonderful community of fellow journalists and friends - put an immense amount of effort into ensuring that the level of attention to my case remained high.
Thank you all so very, very much.
The #IDF claimed that a hospital in southern #Lebanon was being used by #Hezbollah.
Then, the IDF admitted to me that a photo they shared, ostensibly as evidence, was not taken at the hospital.
There is, as yet, no hard evidence to back these claims.
NEW from @nytimes: The definitive story of how Trump took an almost inevitable path to a new US war in the Middle East: Netanyahu repeatedly urged him to attack Iran with Israel, and no aides voiced opposition. Netanyahu also undermined diplomacy. Regime change became the goal.

The latest investigation from Meduza's Razbor team suggests that changes in Russia's record-keeping have fueled some very inaccurate analysis in the West. Given the hope placed in Russia's supposedly accelerating battlefield deaths, these findings are big. https://t.co/GlfYVpebL9
I've been working on this for ages in various countries: the story of the intelligence buildup to Putin's 2022 invasion. How did the US and Britain find out so much, and why were Europe and Ukraine sceptical.
It's a long one:

At my Substack, I examine those Lebanese in Washington lobbying in favor of a Lebanon-Israel peace agreement. I argue that most of these individuals are out of touch with Lebanon's realities, instead creating an information loop to advance a risky agenda: https://t.co/4SqQcraK2R
Syria's northeastern oil fields have returned to state control from the SDF. Is the energy sector now poised for a historic revival?

I feel so lucky to have a bit stability at such a dark time for our industry, and grateful it means I get to stay in Syria, a country I have come to love covering
#Syria 🇸🇾: Journalist Nujan Mala Hassan was shot with live ammunition by Turkish border forces while covering protests on the Syrian–Turkish border. We condemn this attack, demand accountability and stand in full solidarity with Nujan Hassan.
