On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), in collaboration with the Local Self Government (LSG) Department, Rajasthan, conducted an orientation and capacity-building session for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the state about SBM 2.0.
@DadhichJp led the technical session, focusing on practical ways cities can manage, treat, and reuse wastewater sustainably.
The session explored the role of urban local bodies in addressing environmental challenges through effective water, wastewater, and sanitation management.
Discussions covered the importance of planning for used water management, various management approaches and frameworks, technological options for treatment and reuse, and strategies for integrating resource recovery and circular economy principles into urban service delivery.
Participants also discussed how better used water management can improve water security, reduce pollution, and help build more sustainable and resilient cities.
This World Environment Day, CSE highlights a critical gap in how we fight air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Our latest analysis reveals that NCR's industrial emission data is heavily fragmented, severely undermining ongoing pollution control efforts.

June 5th is World Environment Day. It is a moment to take stock; to review, revise and
reinvent the agenda.
As @sunitanar says:
"The good news is that we know more today about what must be done differently than on any previous World Environment Day. This is why June 5, 2026, should mark a new beginning: the start of a new practice of environmentalism, rooted in the politics of inclusive and affordable growth, which, then, is sustainable."

ONGOING: CSE National Roundtable on "Upscaling Distributed Clean Energy in India
The second panel of the workshop focused on understanding the diverse typologies, designs, and deployment challenges of mini-grids across rural India.
A key message emerged throughout the discussion: electricity is not the end goal-- livelihoods are. Successful mini-grids are those that create opportunities for rural enterprises, strengthen local economies, and improve incomes rather than simply supplying power.
Here are some highlights:
▶️ Building rural entrepreneurs and productive-use applications is central to long-term viability.
▶️ Community ownership is critical. Mini-grids succeed when people become stakeholders, not just consumers.
▶️ Sustained engagement matters. Developers must provide handholding beyond installation to help communities realise the full benefits of energy access.
▶️ Reliable energy access can expand aspirations, unlock economic opportunities, and strengthen local development pathways.
The discussion reinforced that modern mini-grids are no longer viewed as stand-alone energy assets or temporary electrification solutions. They are increasingly becoming platforms for rural development, local enterprise creation, and community-led growth.
