5/ How do microbial๐ฆ communities communicate between single cells to behave like multicellular organisms? Awardee @C__Ellison hypothesizes that bacterial cell components (such as pili) are critical modulators.
๐ Congrats Dr. Ellison! @universityofga

Expression of A. baylyi FimT significantly boosts A. nosocomialis natural transformation and suggests that expression of a single gene may be sufficient to make less tractable organisms more genetically malleable.
Excited to share my labโs first preprint! We found that increasing DNA binding by type IV pili in an Acinetobacter pathogen can boost its natural transformation rates by ~100-fold, demonstrating that DNA binding is rate-limiting for natural transformation.ย https://t.co/yagYpLeV0w
We wondered why the species Acinetobacter baylyi is so highly naturally transformable, and we found that its DNA-binding minor pilin FimT contains multiple DNA-binding residues that additively contribute to increased DNA binding.
@Aisha_Burton We have tip box recycling in my lab - we have a green initiative office on campus that helped us figure out a system, perhaps Cornell has a similar office? A con for us is we have to physically drive them somewhere ourselves off campus
WANT A JOB: I have more than one postdoc position open. Letโs do some fun science in easy living Athens. Pay is above NIH guidelines. Email [email protected]. PLEASE RETWEET
My lab is hiring! We are looking for a full time lab tech for 1-2 years who is interested in getting more scientific research experience. Please reach out if you have any questions, and please forward to anyone you think may be interested! https://t.co/YXlN5FWKCn
We are delighted to highlight the 2023 recipients of the Damon Runyon-Dale F. Frey Award for Breakthrough Scientists, granted to seven high-achieving Damon Runyon Fellows who are most likely to make paradigm-shifts in cancer research!
JOB! Come join us @universityofga Our Microbiology dept is seeking a tenure-track Ass Prof in bio ed research. For details and to apply: https://t.co/LBI7FLV33M It is a fantastic environment and community for #DBER and #STEMeducation
Excited to share my last postdoc paper with @zgitai1, @shaevitz, the Dalia lab, Ned Wingreen, and Chenyi Fei! We found Acinetobacter baylyi cells localize their type IV pili in a line to interact with each other and regulate biofilm structure formation: https://t.co/5hYAjVb9Sw
The University of Georgia is hiring two assistant profs in Biochemistry and Microbiology as part of a cluster hire of 5 microbial-focused professors! Weโre looking for good people doing cool science on broad topics, please reach out with any questions! https://t.co/qN6kxIHTp4
@m_strent@UGA Thanks Stephen! I am super stoked to be here in one of the best departments with such amazing colleagues! Also pretty happy about the football team ๐
