The IRS threshold for reporting slot machine jackpots will be changing from $1,200 to $2,000, effective January 1, 2026.
This change is a result of the "One Big Beautiful Bill" (OBBBA) signed into law on July 4, 2025.
The new threshold is also slated to be adjusted annually for inflation starting in 2027.
While this change is seen as a step in the right direction to modernize tax reporting requirements and ease burdens on both casinos and gamblers, some industry stakeholders and lawmakers,
such as Nevada Rep. Dina Titus, believe the increase is still insufficient. They advocate for a higher threshold of $5,000, as proposed in the Shifting Limits on Thresholds (SLOT) Act and recommended by the IRS Advisory Council.
