Researching Gospel birth narratives & holiness in biblical theology.
📚 Author: The Revelation of the Messiah (Cambridge UP, 2023); Gospel Birth Narratives and Historiography (Baylor UP, 2025)
Had the opportunity to join David Capes on the Stone Chapel Podcast recently for two episodes on the Gospel birth narratives.
We discuss how ancient biographies reframe the birth narratives as serious history.

Grateful for this review of my book on Jesus's transfiguration in the latest JETS journal by @CalebFriedeman.
He also has a wonderful new book out on the historicity of the Gospel birth narratives.
Looking forward to this session tomorrow at ETS! I’ll be presenting a paper on my book at the beginning of the session, and then there will be a panel discussion on it at the end.
@rhyneputman Got a copy and am looking forward to reading it! I’m sad to say I found out about this just a tad too late to include it in my book on birth narratives and historiography. But I’ll definitely be citing it going forward.
New resource live on my website: Historic Wesleyan Bible Commentaries.
John Wesley and early Methodists produced a rich body of biblical commentaries. This page introduces them and links to FREE online editions.

Excited to receive my advance copy of Gospel Birth Narratives and Historiography: Reopening a Closed Case (@Baylor_Press)!
Thesis: ancient biographers—including Matthew & Luke—intended their birth narratives to be not legendary but historical.

@ColinEdwards22@MattFriedeman@Baylor_Press Thanks, Colin! Baylor UP has a summary and TOC here: https://t.co/FvLBXL13lV. Since I focus on the intent rather than the truth of the BNs, I don't deal with the census in this book. But I plan to in a future project.
We are honored to receive a $15M gift from the Paul S. & Jean R. Amos Family Foundation to launch a new Ph.D. in Theology and establish an endowed chair.
This transformative gift will shape future scholars for the Church, the academy, and beyond.
