@k9wootty @BBCBreakfast And what percentage of your salary was rent? I ended up with a mortgage at the age of 21 because monthly rent in my area is more than mortgage repayments. That's the real issue here, trying to save a deposit whilst paying rent is what's stopping most young buyers.

Avg UK house price is £226,756, avg wage is £27,600. Saving every penny, you'd take 8.2 years to get the same property, except rent is now 27% of salary (49% London), so it'd actually take 11 years doing nothing but working & paying rent to buy outright

In 1990, the avg UK house price was about £55k, the avg wage was £13,760. If you somehow put every penny into buying a house, you could buy it outright in about 4 years. Avg rent was £200 per month, 1.4% of salary. 1/3
