Back in the day when I was doing farm consulting, I met with this somewhat crabby farmer in SE ND who told me, “I have 10 minutes for you but I’m just going to tell you right now that I’m not going to sign up for your service.”

Two hours later and without even mentioning a price or many details about our service, he said, “I’m in. How much will this cost?”

After asking him when he was signing up he told me that everting tries to sell him stuff but all I did was ask him questions.

I asked him about the history of his farm, when he got into drain tile, the family dynamics of having non-farming siblings, his goals, details on his grain storage and farm shop, and on and on. He was a talker so I kept asking questions. It was fun.

To this day, I continue to be surprised at the amount of people I come across who lack even a little genuine curiosity.

Being curious and seeking knowledge are a superpower in a time when it’s easy to simply be buried in our devices.
