@dsmith1462@StreetsblogNYC Where "the people" means, "the only people Dave Smith cares about," a.k.a. wealthy suburbanites who don't even live here (because they white-flighted out to New Jersey).
@dlepeska@AllezLesBoulez It's tendentious and whiny. He critiques them for being unliberated - as if protesters are obliged to engage with everyone who comes to argue with them, and as if its outrageous that they are wary of reporters.
@kaylee3498 @Urzorn @Krosdon@detachment_red The perspective of the film isn't objective, but that doesn't mean that the film is from Oppenheimer's perspective either. It's about him, but it doesn't necessarily share his view of the world.
@RalphSpeedy @StreetsblogNYC@MTA This is such a bizarre argument on so many levels. The reality is, y'all just don't want to have to absorb even a small part of the cost of externalities that your personal choices create.
@kaylee3498 @Urzorn @Krosdon@detachment_red Oppenheimer can see women as objects without the film seeing women as objects. I don't know if the sex is gratuitous, but the responses here are pretty disingenuous - critical theory has been a thing for a long time, and we all know that boobs in film are not usually for realism.
@RalphSpeedy @StreetsblogNYC@MTA If we don't want to collect taxes from sources unrelated to operation, I think a lot of those of us who don't own cars or drive would like to stop subsidizing car usage. Tolls etc. don't even come close to paying for car infrastructure and externalities.
@holgersjacket @FudgeSpicy @HondaWang No - affirmative action isn't what harms them; the unspoken preference for keeping the number of white students proportional is what harms them.
@CharlieAMWade@dieworkwear I think it is a status symbol in the sense that it proves that they don't have to try - a privileged person will be accepted no matter what they wear. A straight white man can be wearing utter trash and yet his position is assured in society.
@KiraBrook@dieworkwear It's an evaluation of their status in the sense that many straight white men don't feel that they have to bother because, in a patriarchal and white supremacist society, they know they can get away with putting in little effort.
@CGApologist @dieworkwear Also, I don't know if it's really "most" couples. I think it depends a lot on social group - for example, the more nerdy men I know often see themselves as "above" the considerations of fashion; the more creative men usually have a very definite sense of their own style.
@CGApologist @dieworkwear I take your point, but I actually think that if this couple is following stereotypical gender roles then the man wouldn't really be letting the woman choose - like, she picks a "nice" shirt but it's within the confines of her partner's very rigid idea about how "real" men dress.
@NoahMullins@Seej500 It's less that they're lying and more that their stated reasons are not representing the reality of their internal thought processes. I think people very often identify their reasons for doing things without actually having a good understanding of their own motivations.
@fuelgrannie No, of course, they only make a constant noise degrading your ability to concentrate. Meanwhile, how often do people play drums in front of your home?
