Two days into the controversial resume of Iceland’s commercial hunting season, two fin whales have been killed. An endangered species that is vulnerable to extinction, up to 150 fin whales are allowed to be killed through the cruel practice of whaling this season.

Deux rorquals communs ont été tués dimanche soir, marquant la reprise de la chasse à la baleine en Islande.

Après deux ans d’interruption faute de rentabilité, la compagnie Hvalur hf. a repris la chasse commerciale à la baleine cet mi-juin. Les deux rorquals communs sont actuellement transportés vers la station baleinière de Hvalfjörður, où ils seront découpés. Leur viande devrait être exportée au Japon.

Pourtant, la demande diminue depuis plusieurs années. Sur les 24 baleines tuées en 2023, le dernier individu n’a pas encore été vendu, selon l’ONG IFAW.

Cette année, la chasse à la baleine est limitée à 150 individus pour les rorquals communs, une espèce classée comme vulnérable par l’Union internationale pour la conservation de la nature. Selon un rapport officiel islandais, plus de 40 % des baleines tuées en 2022 ont connu une mort lente et douloureuse.

Pour rappel, l’Islande fait partie des trois seuls pays autorisant la chasse commerciale à la baleine, avec le Japon et la Norvège.

Bien que la pratique soit de plus en plus rejetée, les armateurs sont déterminés à la maintenir. Cet automne, un projet de loi visant à interdire la chasse devrait être présenté.
