For the last 38 years, I’ve been a pastor for a church that is roughly equal parts Democrats, Republicans, and independents. We’ve learned to love and embrace each other precisely because of our differences.
Washington doesn’t need more political fights made for TV. Kansans deserve a government that listens.
I’m an independent-minded Democrat. I’ll lead by listening, speaking out against the wrongs, and fighting for our freedoms.
Please share with your friends and family who are ready for new leadership! -AH
Don’t miss worship this weekend as Kate Bowler shares the message based on her new book, Joyful Anyway. Kate is a four time NY Times bestselling author, cancer survivor, professor at Duke University professor, and host of the Everything Happens podcast. I’m grateful to call her my friend. Don’t miss this weekend as we celebrate Pentecost and Memorial Day with Kate Bowler!
Tomorrow (Sunday) is Mother's Day! Join us for worship; we'll celebrate the important women in our lives, and return to the tradition of the very first Mother's Day (started in a Methodist Church) of giving white carnations to all the women. In the message we'll begin and end with moms, and in between study what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount about money and worry. Invite the important women in your life and join us for worship.
My beautiful wife and I will be greeters tomorrow @umcresurrection in Leawood. Please join us in celebrating & worshiping our risen Savior! Looking forward to hearing Pastor Adam say “not only do I believe in the Resurrection but I am counting on it” We agree whole heartedly!

Today Christians mark the crucifixion and death of Jesus - this is Good Friday. Every year on Good Friday, I reflect upon, and pray through Christ's final words, the seven last statements of Jesus from the cross. I thought you might appreciate having them in a possible order they may have been spoken. Matthew and Mark have only one statement, Luke has three other statements, and John three others still. Here they are:
1. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew and Mark - Jesus is praying Psalm 22:1)
2. Woman, behold your son. Behold your mother. (John - Jesus entrusts his mother’s care to his disciple John).
3. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke)
4. Today, you will be with me in Paradise. (Luke - Jesus speaks to the criminal crucified next to him)
5. I thirst. (John - as Jesus, the source of “living water,” is dying)
6. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. (John - Jesus prays Psalm 31:5)
7. It is finished! (John)
My beautiful wife and I are looking forward to worship tomorrow morning. Please join us @umcresurrection for this beautiful Passion Sunday Service as we prepare for Easter.
This weekend in worship, we will focus on the final 24 hours of Jesus' life, starting with Judas' betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, continuing to his trials, Peter's denial, the shouts of the crowd, the conviction by Pilate, the mocking of the soldiers and the crucifixion of the King. We end the service in silence - it is a very moving service as we come to the last Sunday of Lent and prepare for Easter.
This weekend in my message we turn to Jesus' words in Matthew 24 and 25 about the end of the age, his second coming and the final judgment. These passages have left Christians perplexed for two thousand years, and led to all kinds of speculation about the end of the world. Join us as we hear his words and ask the question he was pressing: Are you ready for the day when he returns?
Don't miss worship this weekend! We're focused on what Jesus said and did on Monday of the Final Week of his life. Cursing a fig tree? Answering questions aimed to trip him up. We'll be focused on Matthew 21:18-22 and 22:15-40.
Today at Resurrection we begin Lent and our seven-week study of the Final Week of Jesus' life. All the gospels are focused on this week. We'll take one day of that week for each Sunday of Lent. Today we begin, rather than end, Lent with Palm Sunday. Our kids are carrying in the palm branches as we sing the Hosannas inviting Christ to "save us now", to lead us to think of ourselves less, and to cleanse the temple that is our heart and life. Join us at 11 or 5 p.m., online or TV. [For those worshiping at our locations, online, or tv, it was Emmett Smith who consoled Thurmon Thomas - not Emmett Thomas which I mistakenly said in the sermon when recorded for TV, locations and online.]
This weekend at Resurrection, Palm Sunday??? Yes, Palm Sunday! We are devoting the forty days of Lent to walking with Jesus on the Final Week of his life. That Final Week began with Palm Sunday. Our children will process with the palms as we sing Hosanna. We'll devote the entire service to exploring the significance of Jesus entry into Jerusalem, the donkey, the palms, the cloaks laid on the road, the cleansing of the temple. And we'll see how all of this speaks to us today. Join us!
Tonight in the Resurrection Leawood sanctuary, we are hosting a special event with the American Public Square entitled, I Love You, But I Hate Your Politics. I'll be interviewing therapist Dr. Jeanne Safer and her husband, Richard Brookhiser. They themselves are in different political places. Jeanne interviewed 50 couples, or in some cases, adult children and parents, who were political combatants - people whose relationships were being compromised by their differences in politics. If you've struggled in your relationships over politics, join us! The event is free and begins at 6 p.m.
Today is Ash Wednesday. On this day Christians begin the 40-day season of Lent - a season of fasting, penitence, spiritual reflection and growth as we walk with Jesus towards his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter. We have a service at noon at Leawood and online, and at 7 p.m. at all of our locations. We also have a children and family service at 6:15 at Leawood, West, Downtown and Brookside. These are moving services that end with our writing our confessions, having ashes imposed on our foreheads and then leaving and burning our prayers of confession at the doors. Don't miss Ash Wednesday services.
Loved Pastor Scott's sermon today. If you've yet to be in worship join us tonight - at 4 p.m. in person at Leawood (so you can enjoy the Super Bowl), or on demand at YouTube, or 5 p.m. at our website.
Weather Worship Update: due to expected snow, ice and cold, we will have one worship service at each of our KC area locations this weekend at 11 am (10 am for our Liberty location).
If you have good transportation and don’t mind getting out, it will be fun and inspiring. If you are concerned about getting out, join us on TV at 8 and 11 on KMCI or 9 and KSMO or online at Sat 5 Sun 7:30, 9, 11 or 5 or at our YouTube channel on demand after 5 on Sat. All times Central time zone. The sermon this weekend focuses on fear of failure, fear of criticism, fear of disappointing others and we’ll have a bit about anxiety disorders. We’ll look at how we overcome our fears with faith. Join us and invite a friend!
This weekend we kick-off our new series of messages, Fearless: Overcoming Fear with Faith. Over 3,300 people have taken our fear survey. This weekend we'll consider how fear leaves us paralyzed and the importance of faith in helping us take risk. I'll share some fascinating data from the survey and we'll look at the moment when fear left the Israelites paralyzed a mile from the Promised Land. Here's the trailer for the series - take a look, repost and share with friends!
