This is Wasila Tasiu. She was 14 years old, from Kano State. She was completely uneducated and could neither read nor write.

Her parents and community forced her into marrying a 35-year-old man named Sani. She resisted, but they insisted and forced her anyway.

Handed over to a man she never chose in a region where child marriage remains common despite existing laws, she felt she had no way out.

Days after the wedding, 35-year-old Sani invited about a dozen friends to his home to celebrate. Desperate, Wasila resorted to her inner child and listened to her instincts.

She sent a seven-year-old girl to buy rat poison from the village market, mixed it into a dish of rice, and served it to the guests.

Sani and one friend died that same night. Two more guests died later in the hospital, and ten others were rushed for emergency treatment. The law, her parents, and the community had all failed her.

Immediately after the poisoning occurred, the Sharia court targeted her, self-proclaimed Sheikhs issued fatwas against her, and all the local defenders of forced and child marriage came calling for her head.

The police arrested her. Because she could not write in English, her confession was recorded by an investigator and signed with her thumbprint.

In court, prosecutors sought the death penalty, and the same seven-year-old girl who bought the poison was made to testify against her. Her father, who had forced her into the union, pleaded with the court to spare her life.

Northern lawyers abandoned her, they were all afraid of going against a community-sanctioned crime (forc6d ch!ld marriage) and wanted to keep their reputations intact. But a human-rights lawyer, guided by humanity rather than religious dogma stood up for her.

Wasila spent over a year in detention while her case dragged through Nigeria's courts. Finally, in 2015, the state dropped the charges, and a judge ordered her release.

Yet, not everyone welcomed the decision. Traditional leaders from her community demanded Diyya (blood money compensation) under Islamic law for each victim, and her defense lawyer faced open threats simply for defending her.

Was she a cold-blooded killer, or a helpless child left with no options? Was she born evil, or was she a victim made into a villain by a toxic community and failing parents?

When we campaign against ch!ld or forc6d marriage, we look at it from the perspective of the child not from the perspective of the pedophlle or his concocted religious and cultural justifications to exploit mlnors.

When a society strips a child of her agency and corner her into despair, it cannot pretend to be shocked when she uses the only weapon left to her.

A system that legally protects the predator while demanding the execution of his captive is not executing justice, it is simply executing its own victims.
