The massive Seychelles endemic palm Lodoicea maldivica is a wonder of the botanical world. Its oddly shaped seeds, the largest of any plant, weigh up to 20 kg. It is endangered & found naturally on just two islands, and @FairchildGarden also has an impressive 25-year-old plant.

[Carl Lewis @carllewis]

Palm forests of the Seychelles Islands with 6 incredible palm species found nowhere else. These remote islands are continental fragments, remnants of a larger, mostly submerged land mass that has been isolated in the Indian Ocean for more than 60 million years.

[Carl Lewis @carllewis]

Deckenia nobilis, graceful endemic palm of the Seychelles. Young plants have ferocious spines & some mature plants have spiny, porcupine-like inflorescence bracts. With no large herbivores on these islands today, this might be an ancient adaptation to long-extinct animals.

[Carl Lewis @carllewis]

Phoenicophorium borsigianum on Mahé, Praslin, and Curieuse, Seychelles. This is the most widespread & adaptable endemic palm of the islands, growing from the seashore to high elevations.

[Carl Lewis @carllewis]

Verschaffeltia splendida, amazing endemic stilt-rooted palm of Seychelles rainforests. Look for this species in the @FairchildGarden Rainforest, where it loves the new irrigation & fog system

Roscheria melanochaetes along the Copolia Trail, Mahé, Seychelles. Rare endemic rainforest palm found at middle to high elevations on the granite islands.

We planted about 200 orchids at South Pointe Park in an effort to reintroduce the tropical plants to our city.

Thanks to all who joined us for our Ceremonial Planting of Orchids with @FairchildGarden this weekend. #MBParks

[Fairchild Garden @FairchildGarden]

Native Orchids are back in South Pointe Park for the first time in over 100 years! We had a great planting day with Fairchild’s @millionorchid team & community members from near and far. Soon, these rare orchids will begin blooming and regrowing on their own.

With the right light and dark background, the haunting beauty of the ghost orchid becomes even more striking. You can see this wonder for yourself in the Tropical Plant Conservatory @FairchildGarden

[Carl Lewis @carllewis]

Huge thanks to @GrowBeyondEarth students & teachers in 250+ middle & high schools nationwide. Your research made this harvest possible and will likely help feed astronauts on future expeditions. Great job @Astro_illini, those plants look delicious! @FairchildGarden @NASAKennedy

[Gioia Massa @plantsinspace]

Hi @GrowBeyondEarth. Today @Astro_illini harvested GBE selected Extra Dwarf’ Pak Choi on ISS and he wanted me to pass on to you that the aroma is amazing and smells like the produce section of the grocery store. I’m sure he and his crew will enjoy eating the beautiful plants!

[Carl Lewis @carllewis]

Surprise! The @FairchildGarden Rainforest is now a stunning, illuminated Cloud Forest experience. Looking forward to sharing this magic with everyone soon.

[Brett Jestrow @brettjestrow]

More flowering lilies in the Victoria Pool, this is our first flowering of the intersubgeneric hybrid Nymphaea immutabilis x colorata. Large because of the Australian parent, curious for the red stamens—-
