Carl Olsson’s essay argues that in a technological world where algorithms deploy a weaponised form of empathy to capture human attention, practices of inner peace can no longer rely on disconnection or passive retreat. Instead, he proposes a counter-strategy rooted in regressive asceticism: a deliberate return to older layers of human biological and behavioral inheritance. Through concepts such as Neil Shubin’s “inner fish” and the phenomenon of therianthropy, Olsson shows how humans can invoke ancestral capacities—motor patterns, environmental relations, and embodied repertoires that long predate modern identity to resist the flattening pressures of algorithmic predation.

The essay then deepens this framework through psychoanalytic theory—especially Ferenczi and Spielrein—to show how regression operates as a technique for reconfiguring the self’s relation to environment, history, and embodiment. Whether through animal-identification, athletic reenactment, aquatic symbolism in sexuality, or even earth-burial rituals, these practices reveal a consistent logic: peace emerges when the contemporary subject loosens its grip on its narrowly defined, species-specific form and re-enters broader evolutionary and ecological continuities.

Honestly, as @xenocosmography has noted in a different context, there are two ways out of Deleuze: the Bergson way and the Bataille way. I chose the Bergson way and ended up Catholic—Deleuze himself also quite admired Péguy, the Catholic Bergsonian. The seculars and Protestants choose the Bataille way. In some sense it really is that simple.
