@vanessakrakerr While I agree that we choose to enter the system of our own volition, I don’t think that automatically makes the system not unfair. I still think that some things can be unfair it’s just that we choose to tolerate it.
When we were asked to think about what the perfect society would look like it got me thinking. According to Plato’s allegory of the cave, we can’t actually create one because forms (perfection) are ideal but at the same time how can we imagine it if we rely on experiences. #ewp22
I think that anarchism is a bit too optimistic to be realistic. It would be nice if people all got together and helped each other for free but at the same time people are always going to be vying for some sort of power. #ewp22
When Dr. Patrone said that knowing the form of the good is knowing everything I was confused at first. The more I thought about it the more it made sense. If you know everything that’s good then you know everything that’s bad and through that lens you can judge everything.#ewp22
I think that the idea of the “form” of something is really powerful. If perfection can only exist in our minds then one could argue that we live in a world of imitations. Perfection may be impossible but it’s pursuit is a pursuit of what is good. #ewp22
@jamesmiele2022 But there is an argument that can be made that we only make other people happy to make ourselves happy which I think plays into the idea of psychological egoism.
I think that in general utilitarianism’s greatest attraction is it’s scientific aspect. Other than that tho I feel like it falls apart with the uncertainty of the hedonic calculus. I’m also not convinced that it is egalitarian when you can excuse slavery using this idea. #ewp22
While utilitarianism does sound attractive in many ways I think that the hedonic calculus is a bit flawed. I feel like it’s inaccurate and volatile. It can be extremely hard to know just how much pleasure/pain an action can cause. #ewp22
@JuliaMarie007 I agree with this idea because not only is everything in the box not real but I also find it hard to believe that all the pleasure I would get from it could possibly outway the pain I’d cause by getting in.
I think that it’s very interesting that in general nobody wants to get into the box. Technically it would maximize our own pleasure which seems good in a utilitarian view and yet we reject it. There is something we value intrinsically about authenticity. #ewp22
I think that the way that Mill presents utilitarianism is overall better than Bentham. Something just doesn’t sit right with the “sales pitch” presentation that Bentham give and I think that Mills approach that we are already utilitarian is more impactful. #ewp22
@tay_219_ I agree with this sentiment. While science is usually objective, I feel like it can miss out on some of the more emotional or social aspects of morality.
I feel like psychological egoism is really helpful for trying to figure out why people do things. The avoidance of pain and the pursuit of pleasure are inherently so instinctual that I believe that they are foundational to every decision we make. #ewp22
The concept of the god committee seemed really weird to me. I don’t understand how doctors couldn’t have been thinking objectively about where organs should go and were instead just picking those that they liked. They should have made sure those organs got the most use. #ewp22
@eva_woodworth Yeah Mortimer’s argument had a lot of issues and we sort of had to just assume a lot to try and make it work. Hearing what Leibniz had to say helped to fill in some of the holes in my opinion.
Through the Euthyphro question as well as Leibniz’s argument one can come to the conclusion that god has a reason for what he does. What’s interesting, however, is what could that reason be? Should it be enough for us to accept a “reason” without knowing what it is?#ewp22
I found Leibniz Argument interesting. I thought it was really cool how he argued that God must have a reason for what he says is right by using the fact that otherwise Gods will would be arbitrary. He used the foundation that “god is good” to turn DCT on its head. #ewp22
Nowadays we are thought to be non-combative and that is why I believe we all accept the principal of toleration immediately. We hold the value that there is not one “correct” viewpoint and yet by adopting the principal we immediately contradict ourselves. #ewp22
