There has rightly been a lot of focus on the Green surge at this election & the failed attempt to use climate as an electoral wedge. In Scotland, where there has lately been an explicit focus on climate action & oil & gas policy, the message is at once clearer & more complex
🧵
Today's decision by the Supreme Court in the Finch case is genuinely historic. It marks a turning point towards more sensible planning-related decision-making in the UK, and crucially towards a safer climate.

Labour's manifesto includes a commitment to stop issuing new licences to explore for more oil and gas.
This is a much-needed acknowledgement that new licences are fundamentally incompatible with a safe climate & won't do anything to ensure secure energy or jobs.
A quick 🧵
It has been widely quoted that a windfall tax and removal of incentive allowances for North Sea oil and gas would result in 100,000 job losses. Some said Scotland alone could face this. Is this accurate? In short, it’s misleading. But let’s delve into the statistics 🧵
The fate of the oil & gas workforce is as contested as ever - check out our blog exploring the numbers on Uplift's new website 🔎 https://t.co/18R4NZ0rCG tl;dr After 50yrs of drilling, the North Sea basin & its jobs are in decline, so workers are right to demand a transition plan
There are lots of numbers currently flying back & forth predicting a serious impact on jobs in the UK--esp in Scotland--if new oil & gas licences aren't issued.
Much of this is misleading & misses what's actually needed to secure North Sea jobs for the future.
A short 🧵:
/1
Unsurprisingly, this is a wilful distortion of what’s happening in New Zealand. It also does nothing to advance the case for new oil and gas licences in the North Sea.
Here’s why:

It’s not just the extreme violence that Israel is inflicting on the Palestinians, it’s what western countries from the USA, Netherlands, Germany & France are willing to inflict on their own children to protect the apartheid regime being held accountable https://t.co/Wbhdnx4W9Y
📢Brand new from Uplift:
We need a proper plan to secure a just transition for the North Sea's oil & gas sector i.e. a New Deal for the North Sea

Retweet with seething anger. March with determination. Donate with sickening guilt. Go to sleep with the deepest sadness ever known. This is breaking my brain, my heart, my will. What must it be doing to Palestinians?
Hundreds of thousands of us are nauseated, sickened, angered & broken by what is happening in #RafahMassacre . Failed by all our governments & strutting politicians capable of nothing other than glutinous hypocrisy & poisonous double-standards. I really don't know where we go.
It's hard to breathe. I am checking my feed this morning as every morning, and the few Palestinian voices left are silent. What horrors happened during the night in Rafah under cover of superbowl, @JoeBiden . What horrors.
Rafah is one of the most densely populated places on earth, teeming with children and families, some already displaced many times by war in Gaza.
Of the 1.3 million people seeking shelter, 600,000 are children.
They have nowhere safe to go.
They must be protected.
No ceasefire order. But the ICJ has ruled that South Africa's case is legitimate, that claims of genocide are plausible, and that Israel must stop killing Palestinian civilians and punish officials who have incited genocide. This is a real blow to the Israeli regime.
