@TheCanadianCon @exposforever@Michphil1998@CBCNews Those are Statcan figures. Using the average $579k (given the distribution skew) may not be appropriate in this context.
@acoyne Making voting mandatory seems wrong to me. Making voting easier is a better answer. I can transfer 10s of thousands of $ on my phone (ie security problem solved) but I can’t vote on my phone. Why?
Fast, lift, sprint, stretch, and meditate.
Build, sell, write, create, invest, and own.
Read, reflect, love, seek truth, and ignore society.
Make these habits. Say no to everything else.
Avoid debt, jail, addiction, disgrace, shortcuts, and media.
Relax. Victory is assured.
@acoyne Excellent piece. Add provincial/oth non-fed debt (>$1T now?), unfunded programs (pensions, health) - the picture gets more real.Did govts respond correctly to the crisis (should focus have been on the elderly/vulnerable)? Spend too much? Should it have run surpluses in boom yrs?
@acoyne Good piece. The most charitable thing you could say about the government conditions is that they should help to ensure the money is paid back promptly.
@acoyne Printing money is a stealth tax. Easier to implement than an explicit tax on income, property or wealth. That said the deficit will need to be paid for too so taxes will go up as well...
@JokePostisa@acoyne Is it the economic system or the system of government...? The economic system works well (not without certain issues) but tends to go off course when there is government intervention (and its unintended consequences) - eg 2008 gfc.
@PnPCBC I’m not sure about over reaction but there will be criticism if the government doesn’t get the economy going again quickly while protecting the vulnerable (old, comorbidities). The government can’t replace the economy for much longer. Someone has to pay for CERB.
@CTVNews The contribution was raised in an online campaign? Our contribution is vastly outsized compared to our share of global population or global gdp. Who oversees and audits (for utility) this spending on behalf of taxpayers?
@acoyne In fact what Canada (and most others are doing) is proceeding along a controlled path to herd immunity. The economy must be opened and the vulnerable protected - and hopefully a vaccine is developed sooner rather than later...
