Catan Oil Springs

Eco-scenario for The Settlers of Catan that offers a fun way to grapple with climate change and other environmental challenges.

Unlike real assets #Bitcoin is based on magical thinking, so therefore there could be no floor to this crash.* Very similar to tulip bulbs during the Dutch Tulip bubble pop. For more of a reality check see here: https://t.co/e6iYFqCYv3

Funny that it was an image of @settlersofcatan in this blog about strategic games for change.
@resilienceSci @ClaudeAGarcia: Have you played Catan: Oil Springs? A valuable "strategy game to improve environmental policymaking" (depending on who's playing).

42. That's the answer to life, the universe, and everything. And it's the age of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Happy Birthday to this classic work of hilarious eco-fiction! And if you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and read it! https://t.co/ugCjZ5vNDN @NPR

@LiteralGrill @settlersofcatan @ErikAssadourian If you haven't played it since then, I hope you give it another go--as a former climate negotiator it'd be interesting to hear if you can prevent Catan from being overwhelmed by the sea!

[Catan Oil Springs @CatanOilSprings]

Thanks for the shoutout in your Settlers expansion article @LiteralGrill!

@gabrielmarty @Worldwatch @LiteralGrill @settlersofcatan @ErikAssadourian That sounds right! It came out ten years ago. We played it a lot in DC--American University, @GoetheDC, @NMNH, and @Worldwatch are some of them. Also passed them out at @washingcondc.

The Lorax by @DrSeuss turned 50! Actually the same week the dire @IPCC_CH #climate report came out. If you haven't read the Lorax's journal, which reveals his true struggles with the Once-ler, now's the time!

[Catan Oil Springs @CatanOilSprings]

@LiteralGrill @settlersofcatan @ErikAssadourian Finally, one more twist: you can use oil to protect yourself from the short-term costs of oil. By upgrading cities into metropolises, you get more production, points, & protection from coastal flooding (triggered in the disaster phase), mirroring the inequities in the real world.

[Catan Oil Springs @CatanOilSprings]

@LiteralGrill @settlersofcatan @ErikAssadourian One clarification: sequestering oil gives you more than a Pyrrhic victory--for each 3 sequestered you get a 1VP & if you sequester the most you get another point. Plus sequestering pulls oil out of the supply making it more scarce, more valuable, and less able to inundate Catan.

"What it comes down to is this: By cooling ourselves off, we risk cooking ourselves to death." Really important article by @jeffgoodell of @RollingStone on the "death by air conditioning" fate we're bringing upon ourselves. https://t.co/n3H8R3nwBv

[Erik Assadourian @ErikAssadourian]

Obviously, I'm a bit biased, but we designed Catan: Oil Springs to be fun, playable, and teach about: #climatechange, the resource curse, the tragedy of the commons, & the limits to growth. Plus the key lesson: #KeepItInTheGround.

Dear @SavorTooth, I just read your review of Energetic, which "isn’t going to become the next Settlers of Catan, because it’s primarily designed for instruction, rather than addictive playability." Wish I had seen this when you wrote this. Have you played @CatanOilSprings?

[Catan Oil Springs @CatanOilSprings]

Is it ok to play climate-themed boardgames on #DoNothingForTheClimateDay? I'm thinking yes, but I'm a bit biased. But maybe playing games only if you play outside?

What are you doing May 13th? How about nothing!?!

This May 13th celebrate #DoNothingForTheClimateDay. Take the day to rest, connect with nature, and stay off screens, helping heal both the planet and you, so you can keep fighting for #climate sanity. https://t.co/ZXmLTWg2vw

On Biden's First Day @JoeBiden should:
1) Take a deep breath
2) Rejoin the #ParisAgreement
3) Rescind this ridiculous rule preventing banks from NOT financing fossil fuel companies.

A key question by @DHRasolt
How can we turn "the potentially revolutionary #ecocentric framework of Rights of Nature" from symbolic victory into "pragmatic action in high-risk areas dominated by extensions of the modern world?" @EcolCitizen
