I always loved a long drive, the road seems to stretch on forever, the landscape melds into a surreal experience of internal melancholy. Red mesas, great plains, vast empty deserts all blended together and distilled into reflective contemplation.

Staring endlessly for hours at the mesa ridgeline makes you go a little crazy, you start to see visions of pioneers roaming the praries. The caravans kicking up dust in the distance. Your mind roams with thoughts about where you’ll be in five, ten and twenty years.

What kind of lifestyle would I have?

How cool would my cars be? What about stitches on the dashboard?

I used to think that what I wanted wasn’t just normal, but natural. That perhaps almost everyone wanted the same thing.

Status, wealth, clothes, cars, the fruit of the gods.

When the first man stumbled out of his cave in the morning, he didn’t lust for a Porsche. Yet if you told him that the possession of a 911 would get him multiple wives, do you think he’d ask you what a 911 is?

Fine, that’s their trade-off. It’s true. The Soviet Union delegated the task of low value goods to external Soviet states often with poor working conditions and inefficiency.

When they began to declare independence and moved up the economic ladder, the Soviet Union lost access. The entire Soviet supply chain fell apart overnight.

Turns out not all the Soviet states were content with being sweatshops for muscovites.
