On Wednesday, August 5, the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago celebrated the Historic Transfer of Congregational Leadership with a Mass in Sacred Heart Chapel in Our Lady of Victory Convent in Lemont. Sr. Joyce Shanabarger, OSF, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart (Frankfort, IL) was appointed Pontifical Commissary.
A Pontifical Commissary is a religious who is chosen to assist other congregations with administration and governance. In this role, Sr. Joyce will support the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago and assist them with their future needs, concerns, and initiatives.
A pontifical commissary is a person appointed by the Holy See (the Vatican) to serve as the canonical superior of a pontifical religious institute—typically a congregation of sisters, nuns, or other religious—when that community can no longer elect its own full leadership (superior general and council) from among its members.
This usually happens because of declining numbers, advanced age of members, or other circumstances that prevent the institute from governing itself in the ordinary way. The goal is to allow the community to continue living according to its own charism, history, and constitutions rather than being immediately suppressed or merged.
The commissary is given the authority of a superior general, exercised according to canon law, the institute’s constitutions, and the specific letter of appointment. For women’s institutes the commissary is ordinarily another woman religious; clerics (and occasionally a bishop) can also be appointed. A layperson cannot currently serve in this role. The institute may recommend a candidate, but the appointment itself must come from the Holy See.
The same figure appointed by a diocesan bishop for a diocesan-right institute is called an episcopal commissary. The practice is not new in Church history, but it has become more common in recent decades as many congregations of women religious, especially in the United States and Europe, face demographic decline and embark upon a ‘path to completion.’

A PRAYER FOR OUR KING 🙏🏾👑
Father God, right now we are asking You for a miracle.
You are the God of signs, miracles and wonders. There is nothing too difficult for You. Where human strength ends, Your power does not.
Lord Jesus, stretch Your healing hand over His Majesty King Oyo. Let Your mercy speak. Let Your healing power flow through his body. Restore what needs to be restored, strengthen what has become weak, and breathe life and strength into him.
Father, we are not leaning on what we hear or what we see. We are looking to You.
Please, Lord, have mercy upon our King. Do what only You can do. Give us a miracle.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ,
Amen. 🙏🏾

St. Monica is a saint in her own right, but she’s mostly remembered as the mother of St. Augustine. Have you ever heard of the phrase “a mother’s prayers”? Moms by nature are always praying. They’re always worried about their kids, and Monica is a great patron because Augustine was a handful. @thegnewsroom
Saint Monica (c. 331–387) was the mother of St Augustine. Through years of patient prayer and unwavering faith, she witnessed her son’s conversion to Christianity. She is honored as the patron saint of mothers and those praying for loved ones.
Friends, prior to the Gothic period, European architecture was defined by low, shadowed Romanesque spaces. This shifted dramatically when Abbot Suger began renovations on Saint-Denis, unleashing an architectural revolution.
A world accustomed to the Romanesque style was suddenly awestruck by the unprecedented height and structural grace that the medieval builders achieved with pointed arches and flying buttresses.
These innovations led to the most absorbing feature of all—the addition of stained glass windows that seemed to soar toward the heavens, utterly bathing these sacred spaces in light.
WE ARE REPORTING: 267 Days in Captivity – A Priest Still Waiting to Come Home.
We are reporting today on a story that must never become old.
We are reporting that Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ezema, a Catholic priest from the Diocese of Zaria, Nigeria, has been in captivity for 267 days since his abduction on December 2, 2025.
We are reporting that his name must not be forgotten, and we call for continued prayer, remembrance, and action.
We are praying for his protection, strength, and release, as well as for his family, parish, diocese, and all Nigerians affected by insecurity.
We are urging authorities to act urgently. We are reporting that we will not stop hoping, praying, or remembering until we can announce: "Fr. Emmanuel is coming home."
They said people are no longer interested in Christianity.
Meanwhile, Catholic priest Frei Gilson, Brazil’s biggest streamer, who draws millions to his live Rosary prayers, has reached 10 million subscribers on YouTube.
“You sent down your help from above and rescued my soul from the depths of this darkness because my mother, your faithful servant, wept to you for me, shedding more tears for my spiritual death than other mothers shed for the bodily death of a son.”
-St. Augustine
Saint Monica, pray for us
