@GenealogyBeech I remember it quite fondly. Every Sunday morning in the summer we would file down and splash around after doing one length. Last time I used a mangle to dry my swimming trunks.
@mcgillmd921 Suetonius is a brilliant first choice. Got my first copy when I was about 15. Rubicon is excellent too but can I recommend Robert Harris' Cicero trilogy too.
@mcgillmd921 I read it in my first year at Uni. I was studying Physics but friends were doing History & Politics. They found the language difficult and didn't have a basic understand of Roman history so I read it for them.
I have to admit that I found the chapters on the church difficult.
@WG_RumblePants I am in the anyone but Key camp. MW was a quality player, Key a journeyman. I saw him at Yorkshire's last game at Harrogate and he was clearly the best batsman on the field. Nasser would get my vote but MW comes close second.
@TheBasicExpert1 Small wars were the kick-off point (if one ignores Kriegsspiel as it didn't use models), I would argue that Brig Peter Young's Charge! was the first rule book. I was lucky to play a couple of games with him.
As an aside how Napoleon played Small Wars confuses me!
Used to love JPL. My father in law and I would tinker on his boat on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, grab lunch from Morrisons then go to Headingley to watch Yorkshire lose yet again (for some reason they won at Scarborough - all perception I suppose).
People forget how boring Sunday afternoons were, JPL filled that gap whether live or on TV.
@DamCou I saw this when it first came out. I thought it was as cool as hell (in the cold not hot version). I rewatched the first couple of seasons a couple of years ago (not worth it btw) and this sequence is just as good as it was then.
@London_W4 Partridges used to be me favourite (prices only slightly lower than F&M at the time - late 80s) when they were on the Kings Road. Their wild boar pate was wonderful.
@LordAshcroft@NAM_London@VC_and_GC_Assoc Super news. NAM was my favourite museum when I was a schoolchild in the early 80s; I haven't been for decades, time to rectify that.
