Beyond road safety, we need a bold national alcohol strategy. Alcohol remains a leading cause of preventable ill-health and early death. Government must now act on minimum unit pricing, fairer alcohol duty, stronger marketing restrictions, and clear health warnings.
We welcome the decision to lower the drink-drive limit in England and Wales. It’s a long-overdue step that will save lives and prevent devastating injuries, bringing us closer to Scotland and much of Europe where stricter limits work.

But this change must be backed by strong enforcement: visible policing, mandatory breath testing, and clear, independent public education. People need to understand the risks and the law – and those affected by alcohol dependence must be able to access specialist support quickly.
We welcome new advertising restrictions to protect children from unhealthy food marketing. This is a vital step towards a healthier future but we need further action to protect those in the most deprived areas in our region.

Today the UK's landmark new junk food advertising ban comes into effect, but big food companies are not letting up 🎯
Businesses are switching tactics and using every channel still available to target young people, including:
🚌Outdoor advertising
🏷️Brand advertising (even if they don't show their product, companies can still advertise their brand)
Corporate lobbying has watered down these policies and we have seen delay after delay. We call on the government to ban all forms of #junkfood advertising to children, and create a policy process that is less vulnerable to industry #lobbying.

Withdrawal? Crime? Other drug use?
A comprehensive review of minimum unit pricing found these fears don’t materialise – while health benefits do.

Next year the Government is set to pass landmark legislation to create a smokefree generation.
Legal experts have concluded that the policy complies with EU rules, despite tobacco industry claims to the contrary.
Ultra Processed Food, and the system that produces it, has overtaken tobacco in terms of health and economic harms, and is also the leading cause of plastic pollution, loss of biodiversity and deforestation, and the second leading cause of emissions.

Labour’s plans to relax alcohol licensing risk deepening a growing public health crisis.
Alcohol-specific deaths are at record highs and inequalities are widening. As the @HealthFdn writes, making drinking easier clearly isn’t the answer.
