Twelve years ago, Russia shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, killing 298 innocent people.

Today, we remember every victim and stand with their families, and all the nations that lost their loved ones on that tragic day. The downing of MH17 was nothing but a terrorist act. Russia has made such terror against civilians a defining feature of its policy – toward its neighbors, the world more broadly, and even its own people.

It is important to ensure that the world doesn’t turn a blind eye and that for every Russian crime – both against Ukrainians and against other people – there is justice and accountability.

Isn’t it extraordinary that while the Dail has spent 8 years debating whether avocados, olives & dates, which place no ones life at risk, with an average annual export value of less than €200,000 shld be imported into Ireland from the West Bank Aughinish Alumina has been exporting from Ireland Alumina to Russia to assist the Russian industrial weapons complex and army in its invasion of Ukraine to the value of hundreds of millions of Euro & until recently no one in government or in Leinster House noticed or cared. And no protests on our streets despite Russia’s regular attacks on Ukraine’s civilian population.

The EU has invited Taliban officials to Brussels to discuss a migration deal — and today I am shaken and deeply disturbed by this.

This is the same Taliban that banned girls from secondary schools and forced them into marriage. The same Taliban that, earlier this month, arrested dozens of women in Herat for how they were dressed. The same Taliban that detains, beats and executes women who dare to speak out or break their rules.

Through its system of gender apartheid, the Taliban have erased women and girls from public life. Europe must not legitimise a regime responsible for one of the worst human rights crises in the world.

Any engagement with the Taliban must begin and end with the rights of Afghan women and girls.
