Pre-conference field trip to the Avoca region
Great learning about the geology and history of the Avoca mines. Even if it was sometimes difficult to see the outcrops under the snow ❄️

Colleague @Tom_Coulthard is part of SUPERSLUG, working to understand the long-term effects of natural disasters like flash floods, avalanches and landslides. Thank you @NERCscience for £1mn funding with @PlymUni & partners on the Chamoli Disaster aftermath

Some thoughts on tourists climbing the flanks of Fuego from Acatenango from me, @AilsaNaismith and @Allhamia. The view from the Acatenango terraces is spectacular (and safe) - there seems to be little merit to climb much closer.

Exciting day as @Chenery4Jordan starts the first experimental suite looking at the interaction of pyroclastic density currents and topography. Working with @DrNatashaDowey at our SHU flume facility.
Lahar at Fuego volcano in Guatemala. Lahars are dangerous mixtures of water, rocks, and any other debris from volcanoes and surrounding areas. They can be triggered by rainfall like this one:
Cake or ballotini deposit?
First day in the lab yesterday. Had a great time @sheffhallamuni preparing for data collection in June. Thanks @DrNatashaDowey for having me. More to come in June!
#VMSG2024 has been so much fun. Brilliant talks and posters, great people, inspiring chats and awesome fieldwork!
Some highlights... getting the entire @CatFlows_Hull research group together and seeing our students past and present show off their awesome work 🤩...
We've had a great time at #VMSG2024@vmsg2024. Thanks everyone for the PDC love and chatter. And look! We're all together, for the first time in one place.
We welcome Jordan Chenery @Chenery4Jordan to Catastrophic Flows! Jordan is a postgraduate researcher investigating how topography effects pyroclastic density currents. He has research interests in volcanic hazard management and analogue modelling. He just started a PhD with us!
