Most discussions about Chennai's transport focus on individual projects:
"Build more metros."
"Add more roads."
"Construct more flyovers."
But cities don't work as isolated projects.
They work as systems.
A commute is shaped by:
We often talk about flyovers, widening and mega infrastructure. But a city also needs the basics, visible lane markings, proper signs, functioning signals and clearly defined junctions. Good mobility isn't always expensive. Sometimes it's simply good road management.
@AnnaNagarVoice@SmartBikeIN I agree. Autos can be extremely useful when they complement public transport rather than substitute for it. Short local trips andfirst and last mile connections are where they add real value.
And yes, predictable metered fares would make the system much more trustworthy.
Chennai's auto fare debate is really a public transport debate too. When buses don't reach where people live or aren't reliable enough, commuters become dependent on autos for the last mile. Better feeder services could reduce that dependence.

On autos, I think better regulation is the answer. Drivers need a fair livelihood, and passengers need proper fares.
OMR and Radial Road carry huge volumes, but the problem isn't simply “too many vehicles.” Junction design, turning movements, signal timing, bus operations and access points all affect how much traffic a road can actually handle. Fix the bottleneck, not just the symptom.
Why is crossing the Chennai One signal on Radial Road a nightmare during peak hours?
Traffic queues extend for more than a km, and commuters can take 10–15 mins just to cross the signal.

People shouldn't have to choose between cycling safely and driving conveniently. The goal of good street design isn't to punish one group. It's to give each road user a safe, predictable space while making better use of limited road space.
Every monsoon, Chennai discovers the same weaknesses again waterlogging, dug up roads, damaged surfaces and bottlenecks.The frustrating part is that most of these aren't surprises.We know where the problems are.The real question is why we are still reacting instead of preparing.
Chennai after the recent showers over the last few days resemble a war zone and is full of chaos…If this is how city looks for the trailer rains, monsoon is going to be bad.
There’s slushy, pothole laden roads everywhere
City remains dug up with storm water drains, sewage works. The pits are filled with water and live Tangedco wires running inside them.
Key junctions, roads face a huge traffic congestion without any solution.
The administration seems to be sluggish with all the eyes being on the assembly.
The basics need fast tracked action.
If there is no real consequence for breaking traffic rules, why would behaviour change? Chennai doesn't need more aggressive enforcement for a week. It needs predictable enforcement every day, across the city. Consistency is what builds road discipline.
Traffic enforcement has become zero in Chennai. I don’t see enforcement for pillion helmets, wrong routes, signal jumping, happening anywhere. Utter traffic lawlessness is prevailing.
Chennai knows this problem well. You can build metros, airports and expressways, but if the daily commuter still has to squeeze into an overcrowded train, the transport system isn't keeping up with the city.
Capacity has to grow with demand.
We send missions into space, build world-class airports and run sleek Vande Bharat trains. And then millions of Indians commute like this every day. It’s risky, dangerous and unacceptable. India cannot aspire to first-world infrastructure while accepting this as normal. 😱
Imagine crossing a road without wondering if a bike, auto or car will suddenly cut across you.
That's what basic traffic discipline gives pedestrians a little less fear, a little more dignity.
Chennai deserves that too.
We shouldn't romanticise cycling in Chennai. Heat, rain, traffic and road safety are real barriers. But protected cycle tracks, shaded streets and safer junctions can address some of them. Infrastructure determines whether cycling feels impossible or practical.
Building major corridors isn't enough if they're poorly connected to each other. OMR and ECR need better cross links, local street connectivity and public transport connections. A network works best when people have multiple practical ways to get from A to B.
The impressive part isn't just the tram. It's the frequency, coordination and network design behind it. Good public transport makes waiting and transfers almost disappear. That's the standard Chennai should aim for.
25 km in 2.5 hours is exactly why Chennai needs to stop treating congestion as a road width problem alone. Better buses, stronger transit connections, parallel routes and smarter junctions can give commuters alternatives instead of asking everyone to drive.
Really feel sorry for people who take OMR , Chennai to travel for their work or home. So pathetic roads and traffic. Left Kodambakkam at 6 pm and it took me 150 minutes to cover 25 km stretch (2 hours & 30 minutes) to reach the location next to Sathyabhama University. Don’t know when this stretch will become better. Crazy . Now don’t know how long will take to get back home.😳
The mistake is designing streets for vehicles first and asking how to make them comfortable later. In hot cities like Chennai, shade should be part of the infrastructure plan from day one. Trees + footpaths + drainage + safe crossings.
This is what good public transport integration should feel like easy ticketing, live tracking, clear navigation and a direct connection to the airport terminal. The metro doesn't just need to move people quickly, it needs to make the entire journey easier.
I took the Chennai Metro for the first time, because I was forced. I was stuck in massive traffic jams on the way to the airport, now common in Chennai - ironically due to metro construction.
I had to get to the airport in 30 mins, or I'd miss the flight. I checked Maps- 41 mins by road, 21 mins by Metro. Obvious decision.
I bought a QR ticket on Paytm and jumped on the metro at Saidapet. Brand new, squeaky clean train and polite travellers. So it was easy to travel with a trolley bag.
Every departure and station was tracked live on Maps to the minute. I found this integration really useful.
And when I reached the airport station, I was delighted to find it connected directly to the terminals through travellators.
It took me straight to a Digiyatra Gate, dedicated to metro travellers. Super convenient!
Needless to say, I didn't miss my flight. And I'm happy to write this review about the Chennai Metro, which I now recommend to everyone visiting the city.
The lesson isn't simply “build wider footpaths.” It's “protect the space once you build it.” Chennai needs enough room for pedestrians and a planned place for vendors, instead of forcing every activity onto the same few metres of footpath.
If Indian cities built wide footpaths, it will get encroached by illegal hawkers and Indian commies will rush to defend the encroacher rights as if pedestian rights are unnecessary.
BRT deserves a second look, but the lesson from past systems is important. Dedicated lanes alone aren't enough. Chennai needs frequent buses, proper bus priority, good station access and last mile connectivity. Build the network first, upgrade capacity when demand justifies it.
If the Government of India is rolling out buses in thousands every month. Now is the right time to bring BRT back and also articulated buses. The previous BRTs failed as they lacked the required number of buses and density. Plan BRTs in tier 2 and 3 cities today and upgrade them to metro once capacity is built.
Chennai needs this approach. Every road project should specify a minimum clear footpath width and actually maintain that clear space. No poles, parked vehicles, signboards or encroachments eating into it. A footpath should be designed for walking, not leftover road space.
As per the pedestrian first initative every footpath in Ahmedabad will now have a minimum of 1.80 to 2.00 metres of clear, unobstructed walking space planned as per IRC and MoRTH standards. A small measurement that makes a big difference to how the city walks. AMC is building footpaths designed for its citizens.
