An honor to share with 95-year-old Ms. Opal Lee that the bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday passed the Senateโthanks in large part to her. Ms. Lee, whose house was burned to the ground by white supremacists at 12, spent her life as an educator and activist. A real patriot.
I can't help but find it ironic going into the education field being taught by educators that left the field for the same reasons we should not enter it.
Capitol police officer Eugene Goodman is rightfully being hailed as a hero after singlehandedly holding back rioters from entering the Senate chambers last week.
An Iraq combat vet and member of this Corps, Eugene was a hero long before last Wednesday.
We celebrate his valor.
