Spare your time to read what CHESO's Executive Director said regarding abolition of #deathpenalty to the Government of Tanzania.
LHRC joins the world in marking the World Day Against the Death Penalty on 10th October 2025, reaffirming the importance of protecting the right to life, the most fundamental human right.
Global statistics show encouraging progress as more countries move towards the abolition of this inhumane punishment:
1.112 States have abolished the death penalty for all crimes.
2.9 States have abolished the death penalty for common law crimes.
3.23 States are abolitionist in practices.
4.States are retentionists.
5.The 5 States that have executed the most in the World in 2023 are China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and the USA.
6.Atleast 27, 687 individuals are known to be under a sentence of death around the world at the end of 2023 of which less than 5% are women.
Tanzania still retains the death penalty for serious offenses such as treason and murder, and several individuals remain on death row for such convictions.
LHRC firmly believes that the death penalty does not deliver justice; it perpetuates pain, fear, and hopelessness rather than rehabilitation or restoration. It is time for Tanzania to abolish the death penalty and join the growing number of nations that have chosen life, dignity, and justice over retribution.
Should Tanzania continue to uphold the death penalty while others face execution for treason-related offenses?
Everyone encounters challenges in life and it's natural to feel anxious, isolated or overwhelmed at times.
Prioritizing mental health is important during moments of difficulty or high stress.

Youth across Africa, as highlighted in Angelina Yohana’s reflections on emerging issues in Tanzania, stand at a pivotal crossroads, facing unemployment, digital vulnerabilities, substance abuse, and cultural tensions.
They also embody untapped potential as agents of peace, accountability, and social transformation.
The 26% unemployment rate and the mismatch between education and labor market needs expose systemic flaws.
They also spark creativity, as many young people pursue entrepreneurship despite facing barriers to capital and mentorship.
The rise of mental health challenges, worsened by digital pressures, and the spread of misinformation reveal the urgency of integrating psychosocial support and digital literacy into national youth programs.
Lessons learnt from the NOREC Exchange Program demonstrate that cross-cultural learning, when coupled with leadership and advocacy training, equips young people with a mindset of resilience, accountability, and global citizenship.
Best practices, such as peer counseling, civic advocacy, and entrepreneurship incubators, show that when youth are engaged as partners rather than passive beneficiaries, they create sustainable solutions that address both immediate vulnerabilities and long-term structural gaps.
At the intersection of knowledge and practice lies the opportunity to reposition youth as monitors of policy implementation, champions of transparency, and custodians of peace in their communities.
To navigate these emerging issues, governments, civil society, and international partners must adopt inclusive, youth-led approaches that align with constitutional principles of equality and dignity, thereby empowering young people to build cultures of peace and accountability for generations to come.

Adv.Onesmo Olengurumwa, National Coordinator THRDC's Reflections.
Today, during the Strategic Dialogue On Forging #Partnerships Between #CSOs and #BarAssociations, April 7, 2025, THRDC National Coordinator, Adv. Onesmo Olengurumwa, delivered a compelling presentation on advancing collaboration for the protection and promotion of human rights, rule of law, and institutional accountability.
@OlengurumwaO reaffirmed the collective strength of over 300 member organizations under THRDC, actively working across Mainland and Zanzibar with the joined efforts from @TanganyikaLaw, @LawyersofAfrica, @ealawsociety,@zls, and @zafela.
He reflected on how Tanzania’s 4Rs philosophy has opened new spaces for engagement, dialogue, and reforms, but emphasized that sustaining these gains requires deeper strategic partnerships.
Onesmo emphasized the need to fast-track the development and adoption of a National Policy on Human Rights Defenders based on internationally recognized models, to safeguard the dignity and operational space of defenders.
He also stressed the importance of establishing a National Coordination Taskforce for human rights reporting to regional and international mechanisms, ensuring that Tanzania speaks with one voice and upholds its treaty obligations through broad and inclusive participation.
He advocated for #amendments to the Legal Aid Act, to expand the reach and quality of legal services especially for vulnerable populations.
He further recommended integrating human rights education systematically within the national curriculum to empower citizens with knowledge from an early age, building a stronger civic culture.
Onesmo underscored that child protection must become a national priority, calling for participatory mechanisms that involve government, CSOs, and legal practitioners in safeguarding children's rights against violence and abuse.
We are all proud to champion these bold proposals under the Support of EU Co funded program.
We remain firmly committed to driving forward a collaborative movement that strengthens partnerships between CSOs, Bar Associations, and government actors, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of justice, dignity, and human rights.
