@pretentiouswhat It’s also deeply insulting to Chinese people like me from poorer regions. Some people like him from wealthier areas have this social Darwinist mindset thinking hard work/bootstrapping would overcome poverty. So much regional discrimination comes from this Atlas Shrugged ass logic
@ruima My father left her because of this. I’m glad that my mother couldn’t be forced to have more kids just to keep her marriage. And knowing my father’s family that’s something they’d do. I’d be only getting 9 yr of education then work as a migrant worker to fund my brother’s life
@ruima Funny how some called this a diaspora take but this take is actually more accepted back home. Before OCP, right after being born, my mom was put outside to die by my grandfather’s family, until my grandmother recovered enough strength and took her back in. I was born under OCP
@AngelicaOung I stayed at the Yangtze Boutique Hotel on Nanjing Rd and it was pretty good value for a 5 star. It’s right next to the metro and shops and probably the most affordable 5 star in that area
China should have a much more equal, stronger and far less decentralized welfare state to increase consumption of the Chinese working class. Conflating this issue with false claims that China industrialized (or currently has) "slave labor" and "starvation wages" is absurd.
@gonglei89 Any policies would only slow down the drop in TFR until it gets to a certain low number. Tbh by far the most effective method to keep TFR high is a variety of conservatism whether it’s religion or cultural norms but that’s not good for women
@gonglei89 Well even if I get all my expenses paid for and have all 24 hours of the day to myself I’d just do things I enjoy instead of raising kids. I think convo on TFR ignores the fact that many women simply don’t enjoy raising kids or raising a lot of kids regardless of incentives
