@garyleff@iflyplaces have likely concluded the spin offs were too much to make the deal worthwhile. And, Duffy said, "(if a merger between the two airlines formed) they’re going to have to peel off some of their assets”, but a decision would be made on a “case-by-case basis”. Just as Isom indicated.
@garyleff@iflyplaces Secretary Duffy is the Transportation Secretary, a separate cabinet position. The DOT does a separate anti-trust review, but historically has not interfered with airline M&A & leaves that decision to Justice. Just like each United-US Airways proposed merger, the parties 1/2
@garyleff@iflyplaces Kirby could ask the president, but Scott & United's legal team knew the odds of a merger were near zero. For example, the combined business entity would control 88% of ORD traffic. NYC would be a huge issue too. United's "executive suite" knew a merger would never happen. And...
@garyleff@iflyplaces Newark, LaGuardia & JFK are common city airports for antitrust review. If the DOJ sued to block the American-JetBlue JV - the DOJ would require EWR, LGA & JFK divestitures or sue, just like the 5 times USAir-United tried to merge & Dulles-DCA DOJ divestitures were 2 much to bear.

@JPL606@BoardingArea@LiveandLetsFly In JetBlue merger issue, even with "for sale" sign on its front door, is its debt is prohibitive. If a deal occurs, the likely merger partner is American Airlines. A JetBlue-AA merger would create 3 large NYC carriers, lower ticket prices, & create more competition...
@JPL606@BoardingArea@LiveandLetsFly ...an extreme NYC revenue loss, which would make a merger not worthwhile. Otherwise, the 3 NYC airports would have an effective duopoly with Delta & United having tremendous pricing power. Furthermore, JetBlue has about $9 billion in debt that no company, so far, is interested...
@LiveandLetsFly@Enilria6 Kirby knows an AA-JetBlue merger would not fly with the DOJ. Kirby's intention was to try to interrupt Robert Isom's attempt to merge with Alaska, but Ben Minicucci told Isom he wants to remain independent. Third party comments are not necessarily literal when a CEO speaks...
@LiveandLetsFly If American & JetBlue could not get their JV approved with AA's reduced NYC market share, the DOJ would likely not approve a United/JetBlue merger without NYC divestitures that would be dramatic.
@Enilria6@LiveandLetsFly For DOJ antitrust reviews EWR, LGA, & JFK are considered common airports. A potential United-JetBlue merger would require tremendous slot/gate divestitures, which makes a combination unlikely. United is very concerned with JetBlue's debt approaching $9 billion.
@Aviationa2z@Delta@united@AmericanAir American Airlines reported during their Q1 conference call they paid down their debt from about $54 billion on 3/31/21 to $34.7 billion on 3/31/26. That's an average of about $1 billion in debt reduction/quarter or $330 million/month. That's a important omitted comparison point.
@FreshMortadella@OneMileataTime “We’ve got a lot of experience, and whether it’s the potential for M and A, or the work we’ve done to pioneer partnerships, we’re going to be on the forefront of that," Isom said.
@FreshMortadella@OneMileataTime This week Robert Isom said, "If there are opportunities from a consolidation perspective, or if there’s assets that become available in the marketplace, American has a long history of being aggressive,” he said.
@Arkansas3657@AmicoHoops One more point...wait until after the break when Mobley, Wade, and presumably Struss returns. What combinations will Kenny use? It could be hard to take any of these 8 off of the floor for too long. Koby might have traded for a finals roster...
@Arkansas3657@AmicoHoops What I thought was impressive last night was the end game floor spacing with Mitchell, Harden, Merrill, Tyson, & Allen on the floor. I do not think I have ever seen a Cavs team with so many threats. Pick your poison. And, it will be great when they have their first practice, lol!
