A Muslim man in Brussels has died after stepping in to defend a woman who was being subjected to racist and Islamophobic abuse on a tram.

Driss Atouane, a 54-year-old father and supermarket manager of Moroccan heritage, confronted a man who was directing anti-Muslim abuse at a fellow passenger.

He was then attacked from behind and beaten while on the ground.

Driss was conscious when he was taken to hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. He later fell into a coma and passed away on Sunday.
