@ProfeLunaMartin It's a wonderful thing, when there is an environment of openness and honesty. Where adults and students can receive critical feedback and use it as a tool for growth; rather than reacting emotionally.
Traditional grading practices cause anxiety within the study population. They alienate students to have a distaste for learning. Grading should build confidence, efficacy and feedback should be direct and accurate. #MSUM644
@tjohnson_7@JOistad Agreed. I always empathize with students having a bad day and say, "Moma said there'd be days like this." I relate to their experience with a story of a bad day of my own.
@ah89153978 I'm glad there are math experts in the world, I could never fill that role. It sounds like you are differentiating and tailoring instruction as you monitor the progress of each learner. That's a great way to make sure all students are advancing in your course
@ItstheRealMr_B ELO makes me think of the band ELO from Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. I'm guessing it stands for Education Learning Objective. Is your school completely SBG?
@tanyasyvertson @LightEduFires That's refreshing to hear. Many teachers believe in academic rigor and that doesn't necessarily produce better results. We need to relieve pressure off students backs, not add to it with high stress assignments they won't remember in 5 years.
A4: I currently allow late work at all times during the quarter without penalty. This allows students flexibility that they donโt get from other classes. My motto is โlate work better be good work.โ #MSUM644
@jdahlheimer "Needled to death with rules" should be quote on a wall. Organizations are built on trust, when people feel trusted and valued they will perform better.
Myth #4: Students are no longer held accountable for the content of the class, homework or tests. Teachers in my district will be worried that students wonโt have incentive to complete homework or study for tests. The concern would be focused on a lack of accountability. #MSUM644
@JOistad It's great to hear your taking small steps towards rethinking grades. This is something we all have to do. Big change happens with every small decision.
@ProfeLunaMartin Martin I agree if you have different grading processes and philosophies from other teachers you can catch "heat" as a teacher. I catch heat for not docking late assignments like my peers. I wear it as a badge of honor.
A2: I include my simple grading rubrics within the handouts for the assignments. It's a more transparent grading process, which helps build confidence in the art room. Iโve developed a balanced formula for daily effort/participation, projects and sketches. #MSUM644
@schlecht_jacob I agree it would take a monumental overhaul of the grading system at a school to make the change. An entire system has to make the commitment, you can't have any squeaky wheels
