Enough is enough. The House of Lords is a rolling scandal - sign @electoralreform's call to demand change. It takes 30 seconds. https://t.co/fnKBy4p0Iy
@IanDunt So they'd fine parents if their adult children don't want to be conscripted to get shot at in the event of a conflict? They are absolutely bonkers.
The logic of this is that parents can be fined for something their grown-up children do (or don’t do) - which would be an extraordinary new legal principle
Election so far this morning:
* Minister refuses to rule out fining parents if their children decline to take part in Conservative's new national service scheme
* Labour says private schools blaming plans to impose VAT on school fees for financial woes are 'a bit desperate'

@ThomasEvansAdur Hi Thomas. Sanctuary has a dictionary definition, and this of course fits it.
How many? Too many. And you have no idea of these people’s stories partly because the government failed to process their claims (hence the cost)… you also have no idea of their motives. Judge not…
This is seriously grim. I’m reluctant to glibly overuse the term ‘far right’, but this is properly abhorrent. The tragedy, Richard, is that - whatever one’s views on migration - you think it’s OK to camp outside the sanctuary of people whose circumstances you can’t even imagine.
@maitlis It should be pointed out that putting youth compulsorily into military uniform is what Hitler did on Germany in the 1930s, isn't it? Is fascism really the way to go? I don't think so.
Considering that the money is being taken partly from levelling up funds, and Labour is regularly asked "where is the money coming from", failing to mention this is poor from the BBC
BBC News at Ten report on the Tories' national service policy included a pointless "mixed views" vox pop but made absolutely no mention of how the scheme would be funded 🤷♂️🙃
Hope the Sun doesn't endorse Starmer. It doesn't make a blind bit of difference what it does and it would be nice to finally kill off the myth that it can directly influence events.
Exclusive: Rishi Sunak is considering requiring future applicants for public sector jobs to have completed National Service
It’s one of the enforcement options that would go to the Royal Commission for consideration if he gets to enact the policy
