I'm deeply confused about the number of people who appear to be mourning the loss of a man who devoted one article to the question of whether child sexual abuse imagery should be illegal to view, and suggesting in another he couldn't be a teacher because of what he would want to do to The year 10 girls (paraphrased)

Both of these articles are still out there, and I can't understand how they were ever published in the first place.
But anyway, the point is, a person who writes like this should definitely not be eulogised.

The New York in the new Spider-Man movie is Glasgow, Scotland. Marvel closed around 60 streets in the city centre, rolled in yellow cabs and NYPD cruisers, hung American flags, and shot Manhattan 3,000 miles from Manhattan. The whole film, August to December 2025, was made in the UK.

Glasgow keeps landing this role because of an accident of urban planning. It's one of the only British cities built on an American-style grid, and its Victorian sandstone blocks read as pre-war New York on camera. World War Z used it as Philadelphia. Indiana Jones 5 used it as 1969 New York. The Batman sequel starts shooting there as Gotham next.

Tom's street point is real. Glasgow's council will hand a studio the city centre for weeks at a time. New York manages closures block by block, day by day, around 8.5 million people who need those streets.

The bigger number sits underneath. The UK pays productions back 25.5% of qualifying spend in cash, with no annual fund cap and no per-project cap. New York's credit is nominally higher at 30%, but the state pool is capped at $700M a year shared across every production, and until May 2025 actor salaries only counted toward it up to $500K per person. On a film where the lead makes eight figures, that gap swallows the headline rate. New York fixed the rule months before cameras rolled. Marvel had already built its New York in Scotland.

On a Spider-Man sized budget, the UK check lands somewhere around $40 million. That buys a lot of owned streets.

Glasgow shut down 60 streets for a month to play a city that won't shut down one.
