One thing you notice when you read pretty much anything written more than 100 years ago is just how impoverished and bland and limited our language has become. People spoke and wrote in a kind of effortlessly rich and descriptive way that almost no one does today. On this site a lot of people write almost exclusively in cliches and internet lingo. A lot of people speak like that too. The language contracts, our conversational vocabulary shrinks more and more over time. And the more limited we become in our language, the more limited we are in our thinking.

Assimilation into Western civilization is not an issue with Latin American immigration into the U.S., for the obvious reason that Latin America is itself part of the West. It is an enormous issue with large numbers of Muslim immigrants into Western countries. This is one reason it is so monumentally stupid and counterproductive for certain segments of the right to go on about race and ethnicity rather than culture. It gives aid and comfort to liberals who want to dismiss serious concerns about assimilation as racist. If Christians want to solve this problem long term, they should recover their missionary spirit and look for ways to evangelize Muslim communities already in the West – even as they re-evangelize apostate Westerners themselves – thereby turning these immigrants into Christian brethren (and therefore, into the bargain, fellow Westerners). Stop obsessing over the idols of race and ethnicity and start focusing on what is really important, which is the Great Commission to make disciples of all peoples. This will not be easy, but the key is to find a way to turn what looks like an insoluble problem into an opportunity. Also, stop saying stupid and ill-informed things about Islam. You will not make headway in converting Muslims to Christianity unless you understand the strengths and attractions of Islamic civilization, and not just its defects.

No diplomat in Rome is more beloved than Eduard. Poor Pope Leo, losing him to pastures new so early in his pontificate. Like many of you I have personally benefited and learned from Eduard’s wisdom and kindness. Also, somehow he pulls off the extraordinary trick of celebrating his legendary family without a trace of snobbery. I think that’s called being Catholic.
