Supervisor of Schodack NY, Rensco GOP chair, recovering dairy farmer, currently raising beef, pork, poultry, and 2 daughters on our 110 year old family farm
@LoftusSteve@JohnPretty2o2o This exactly. And China or Russia doesn’t need to exercise full control, they just need to deny sole influence to the Europe/US.
People can call this all hearsay and arbitrary, and sure, the definitions apply, but our milk, much like the people, aren’t really all that much different regardless which side of the line you’re on. In some cases, for some periods of time, they’re basically the same
Well when the border shut down, that left A LOT of extra heifers north of the border. Back to N.N.Y. and there were plenty of examples of farms that straddled the border and these farms had long standing arrangements to cross the border during field work etc.
Eventually the rBST restrictions in the U.S. did away with those sales and like all good things eventually the government caught on the quiet import of heifers dried up.
Additionally, before mad cow shut down live cattle imports, up to 7 in 10 dairy heifers in CA ended up in the U.S. Guys built entire businesses around it. It was not an insignificant portion of a lot of CA dairy farmers income.
Things so very few will care about, but when at times the entire Canadian identity seems (to outsiders at least) as being more “we’re not American” than even being Canadian, i appreciate JJ’s continued attempts to not cater to this seeming insecurity that Canadians have.
It's amazing what anti-American propaganda can do. American milk is exactly the same as Canadian milk, it just costs more because we put tariffs on it to protect a wealthy cartel of Quebec farmers. But I guess Carney's gambling the country is full of suckers like this guy.
Before the pushback against rBST use in the U.S., I got to know plenty of farmers in Northern New York and there were plenty of examples of smaller dairies getting more than 2-4x the doses of rBST as they had cows every 2 weeks. Wasn’t hard to figure who got those extra doses
Who would have thought the topic of milk would ignite such passion and definitive statements as “I can taste the difference between US and CA milk.
I assure you, you can’t.
But two quick asides about this border of ours and milk…..
@GaullistTory@JJ_McCullough Shortly before we stopped shipping milk, our milk cooperative reduced their acceptable limit on SCC to 400,000. A lot of other milk handlers/co-ops do the same.
If national limits on SCC are such an issue, then why is the average U.S. and CA farm SCC roughly the same, ~180,000
@PolicyEngineer So am I understanding this correctly? We’re taking regions that were previously using a ton of green energy in the form of hydroelectric and now increasing demand so much via the electrification of everything that they’re now reliant on non-green energy sources?
Easy to forget just how awesome people are sometimes with all the negativity social media tends to highlight.
Appreciative that my algorithm somehow saw fit to bring this across my feed.
My wife and I had 4 miscarriages. I didn't think I would ever be able to share a moment like this with a son or daughter. Then, in 2015, our baby boy came to us. We named him Kinnick. I thank God for this gift. Last night was a magical night we got to experience together.
@BlakeGendebien I’ll bite, how? What policies could be implemented to stem the loss of dairy farms? Limiting farm size? Cracking down on use of undocumented labor? Quotas? What steps could have been taken or implemented to reverse the trend?
With all due respect Mr. Delgado, if you thought you were going to win reelection in 2022, you wouldn’t have jumped at the chance to be Lt. Governor.
I don’t know if you get to criticize people for being scared.
Hey @lawler4ny - I was first elected to Congress in a district that voted for Trump b/c I listen and stand up for the people.
I get you’re scared because folks are rallying against you in your own district, but people want leaders who listen and fight for them — not more of the same tired, status quo politicians launching baseless attacks.
