Halima*-a blind teacher-lost her classroom, income & rights after 2021. On #HumanRightsDay, we honour her—and insist their dignity isn’t forgotten. From closing centres 4 blind girls to banning womens education & work, Taliban decrees amount to gender apartheid @Metra_Mehran
Taliban has criminalized womanhood for 4 years, but U.S. still has no official foreign policy on Afghanistan. As Congress returned from recess and the UN Security Council meets tomorrow, here I outline foreign policy options for Washington to act.

“When the Taliban seized power in 2021, the women of Afghanistan’s hard-won rights were swiftly erased. Bans on education, employment, and even access to public spaces reflect not incidental repression but a deliberate policy of gender apartheid. This daily reality parallels South Africa’s apartheid regime, where exclusion and domination were legally enforced to maintain control.”
In April, as part of a delegation led by @MalalaFund
together with @EGACampaign and @civ_engagement, Afghan women leaders travelled to South Africa to learn from the struggle against racial apartheid and to build global solidarity to end gender apartheid.
In a new article for the Civic Engagement Project and Atlantic Council’s joint series, Inside Gender Apartheid, Farhat Ariana Azami details her conversation with Gertrude Fester, a veteran South African anti-apartheid activist, and Munisa Mubarez, a women’s rights advocate from Afghanistan, which captures the parallels between the anti-apartheid struggles in South Africa and Afghanistan.

Four years on from the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, Christiane and Jamie ask - what is the current situation in Afghanistan like for the people still living there?
@amanpour@JamesP_Rubin@globalplayer
One of the speakers, @azadahrm : advocated for a hybrid model for a mechanism - one that includes a pre-prosecutiorial function & public reporting function.

My reflection: "I also noticed certain parts of my brain, my imagination nd my thinking awakening after being inactive 4 so long. One thought deeply stood out: how could we have ignored the leadership of the Global South for too long?" @MalalaFund

The EGA team recently joined @MalalaFund@Civ_Engagement in South Africa to bring together a delegation of women from Afghanistan, where they met with South African jurists and human rights leaders to share, learn and build solidarity to codify gender apartheid.
Don’t miss this incredibly powerful piece from @ZahraJoya reflecting on a recent delegation visit by Afghan women to South Africa organized by @MalalaFund, @EGACampaign & @civ_engagement. It was an honor & a privilege to participate and I’m still sitting with so many reflections.
