[Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit @FIUNigeria]

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) recently hosted regulators and financial intelligence practitioners from 11 Eastern and Southern African countries led by the @civicadvisory, for a Peer-Learning Visit focused on safeguarding the non-profit sector from illicit financing risks.

The engagement brought together representatives from Botswana, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to exchange experiences, share best practices and learn from Nigeria’s reform journey in implementing FATF standards for Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs).

Participants explored Nigeria’s NPO Terrorist Financing Risk Assessment, stakeholder engagement processes, inter-agency coordination mechanisms and risk-based approaches to monitoring and supervision.

The visit reinforces the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing and collective action in protecting the integrity of the non-profit sector while ensuring it continues to support humanitarian and development objectives across Africa.

Yesterday, we wrapped up the 3rd Africa High-Level Civil Society AML/CFT Conference with another series of insightful plenary and parallel sessions focused on the effective implementation of FATF Recommendation 8.

From shared learning across jurisdictions on positive implementation practices under FATF Recommendation 8, to advancing multi-stakeholder efforts towards financial inclusion for NPOs, safeguarding humanitarian action from the unintended consequences of counter-terrorism financing measures, and exploring self-regulatory models and practices for NPOs across Africa, the rich discussions and exchanges throughout the two-day convening generated practical recommendations and action points for financial institutions, regulators, financial intelligence units, FATF-style regional bodies (FSRBs), NPOs, and assessors.

We deeply appreciate the over 200 participants from more than 30 countries who made this landmark conference a success. Our sincere gratitude goes to our co-organisers—the Special Control Unit on Money Laundering (SCUML) of the EFCC and the Civic Advisory Hub—as well as our local and international partners for their unwavering support and commitment throughout the conference.

As the conversations conclude, the real work begins. Together, we remain committed to advancing proportionate, risk-based AML/CFT measures that protect the integrity of the financial system while preserving civic space and enabling the vital work of non-profit organisations across Africa.

A Kenyan delegation comprising officers of PBORA @PBO_RA and the Kenya Non-Profit Organisations (NPO) Working Group on Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is participating at the 3rd Africa High-Level Civil Society Anti-Money Laundering/Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Conference, joining more than 150 participants from more than 30 countries alongside regional and international partners.

The July 14-17, 2026 conference provides a platform for meaningful dialogue on the effective implementation of AML/CFT standards, while promoting a risk-based approach that safeguards the vital work of Civil Society Organizations across the continent.
