The @BBC’s Political editor, Chris Mason, is, predictably, very quick off the blocks in framing Burnham negatively.

Rather than lead with the substance of Burnham’s first-day announcement (cutting VAT on household electricity bills from 1 October) Mason centres the entire piece on immediate internal criticism and factional tension.

The headline (“Starmer ally takes swipe at Burnham’s first big policy”) and lead portray a supportive-but-cautious @X post by sacked minister Darren Jones as hostile “flak” that will “sting” in Downing Street.

Mason opens with a general rule about watching “dislodged, demoted and rejected” former ministers, primes the reader for dissent, and deploys dramatic language (“already – within hours”, “Ouch”, “loaded with political bite”), ironic mockery of Jones’s short-lived “vow of silence”, and loaded victimhood terms (“banished Starmerites”, “pretty significant cull”).

He notes the Digital ID funding critique applies equally to the previous Starmer government but quickly pivots the burden onto Burnham as the new prime minister. A first-person aside (“I hadn’t anticipated it starting so soon”) adds personal surprise at the speed of division.

In reality, Jones’s post begins with “Good news that VAT will be cut” and offers only a generic warning about paying for new policies. Mason’s selective emphasis downplays the positive framing and converts a standard fiscal caution into a targeted political attack.

The piece lacks counterbalancing quotes from Burnham’s side or any explanation of the VAT cut’s rationale or popularity, leaving it almost entirely focused on reaction and potential future strife.

For a non-aligned reader, this constructs an impression of early fragility and inevitable infighting around Burnham’s leadership, consistent with Mason’s pattern in earlier coverage of portraying him as a source of tension and “psychodrama” rather than a straightforward alternative.

While technically accurate on the OBR references and the post itself, the headline, loaded verbs, and overarching narrative represent highly selective spin that feels agenda-driven and clickbaity.

This is not good enough, and it is increasingly apparent that there is a pattern emerging in Mason’s commentary about Labour...
