Large hail is expected across parts of Nebraska and Iowa this evening. An important component of a large hail environment is to have minimal CAPE below the hail growth zone (HGZ) temperatures and maximal CAPE within the HGZ.
Understanding the adiabatic process (which is any process where there is no heat transfer into or out of a system) is incredibly important for meteorology. I’ve put together an animation explaining why air cools down as it is being lifted and vice versa.
Wider convective clouds tend to resist harmful dilution of their buoyancy by entrainment because they have a smaller ratio of exposed surface area to volume. If you generalize to include the effect of tilt on this ratio, you find that tilting a storm *increases* entrainment.
Mind-blowing event yesterday east of Annapurna II (NE face visible here, 7937 m, Nepal)! 😱
Probably triggered by ice (+rock?) avalanche at high elev., given the reach and absence of snow at the moment 🧊
The extent of the aerosol is... HUGE! ❄️

This #Sentinel3 image from 2 April 2025 provides a rare, cloud-free view of the British Isles.
Acquired in the wake of the UK’s sunniest March on record since 1910, the image reflects a period marked by extended sunshine and exceptionally dry weather.

Newly available high-resolution satellite imagery collected by Maxar reveals sections of the surface rupture near the zone of maximum surface displacement of last week’s Mw 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar. Rupture is ~500 km long, with up to 5 meters of fault slip.
🌧️Thanks to data from @esa_earthcare, scientists are getting useful insights into storm systems like the ones that hit Spain and Portugal in March, helping them better understand how clouds and aerosols affect Earth's climate.

Et si l’année 2025 s’annonçait prolifique en terme de nombre d’impacts de foudre ?
Nous allons parler du « marais barométrique », une situation météorologique pouvant entraîner des multiplications d’orages (réf : mai/juin 2023)

Wildfires spark naturally or from humans, and we’re improving detection. Climate change intensifies them with heat and drought, but WMO’s forecasting gives a clearer picture of risks and impacts everywhere, powering #EarlyWarningsForAll.
