Happy Fourth of July to all my American friends as the United States celebrates its 250th year of independence.

My relationship with America began in my early childhood in Washington DC, where my late father, Isaac Moghalu, served as a Nigerian Foreign Service Officer in the 1960s. He was a diplomat in Washington DC for three years until the Nigerian political crisis led to our return home in 1967.

In 1991, I returned as a young Nigerian lawyer and journalist, serving as a Visiting Scholar at the Southwestern Legal Foundation’s Academy of American and International Law in Dallas, Texas, run by The @CAIL_LAW Center for American and International Law. During my six-week stay, the Editorial Board of @dallasnews invited me to write an op-ed piece on my impressions of America. I share that piece here, reflecting on whether my impressions hold true today and if they were accurate then.

My piece was well received, and I later moved on to @FletcherSchool @TuftsUniversity for a master’s degree in international affairs, which led to an international career within the United Nations system. I later returned to teach on The Fletcher School’s faculty as Professor of Practice in International Business and Public Policy after my service @cenbank

I found it interesting to stumble upon my piece this morning while going through my records.
