HITTING IS HARD
You don’t hit .300 every day. You might go three weeks & hit .150 then have a week where you hit .600. I don’t love batting average as an indicator of if you are hitting or not but the players gravitate towards it. Most rather get a hit with a bad swing & bad EV than line out. When players go into an extended slump( Yogi-No slump just not hitting) they lose confidence often over thinking & getting bogged down with too many mechanical thoughts which exacerbates the situation. To get out of the slump, you eventually have to get your hits when you are not confident. We talk about process over outcome & redefining success so that you are not only successful when you get hits(IE hard contact/putting a good swing on your pitch) but ultimately you need to get hits to regain your confidence. That doesn’t mean you can’t tweak your routine, etc. But hitting your way on base changes everything. It’s not easy. It’s takes a high degree of mental toughness. There are a couple things you can do to help your team & your psyche when you are not hitting. Play great defense, take your walks & run the bases aggressively & intelligently. Help your teammates play better & help your team win. Stay present. Don’t focus on your failures & how many future hits you’re going to have to get to match the stats on the back of your baseball card.
Fellow coaches:
We should never be a part of their nervousness. Their anxiety. Their fear. Their self doubt. They do enough of that to themselves.
We NEED to be the leader they need. The person that helps them work through the hard. The person who teaches them how to deal with the tough. The person who is a living example of calm and stoic. The person that builds them up. The person that helps them with confidence.
Sure, they need honesty but if you want that “honesty” to hit right, you need to build that trust. You need that connection with them. You need that relationship. They need to know you are there for them and care about them.
Absolute gold on being coachable. One of my old college coaches once told me “O I think you will listen to a homeless man on the side of the street if you think he can help you be a better hitter..” & it was true! You should always look to find ways from everybody you encounter in life on how you can improve!! Remain open to grow, improve, & get better. Especially listen to people who have done it before you & had success!!!! They have the blueprint & experiences that can in return help you!
Being “cool” , & the team clown gets you through high school. The things you get from being coachable & grinding/working to get to a high level in your field lasts forever & where real respect is found. @HittersUniv
Today's 98 mph is the equivalent of the Jugs gun 94 and the Ray gun 90.
Don't be fooled by all these new wave velocity numbers.
Velocity numbers are now comical.
The overwhelming majority of college hitters don't have the bat speed to hit real 95+.
The overwhelming majority of high school hitters don't have the bat speed to hit real 90+.
Tom Brady explains his mental edge and why practice (not gameday) creates separation.
"There was a part of me that was a psychopath out there. I was extremely hypercompetitive every day. I didn't feel like let's get to Sunday and now it's the time...Every day is the time to give your best, even in practice."
Every day your standards are either reinforced or lowered by how you treat practice.
You don’t flip a switch into excellence. You rehearse it daily.

Ding… 🛎️ Ding 🛎️ Ding 🛎️ !!!
The Tigers struck out the least as a team in June (of all season) and they had the best offense in baseball that month.
** So nice to see a MLB Team finally Make that significant connection! See video…
Striking out hurts your offense and loses games… I’ll stand on that mountain forever. Got to put the ball in play with 2 strikes. Hard preferably, yea of course, but even softer hit contact and miss hits find holes and can be tough plays for D. But Hard “right turns” and “left turns” with a K don’t do that. No pressure put on opponents.
Develop a solid 2 strike approach and fight tooth and nail to survive! Move the lineup, pass it down. Frustrate the pitcher and defense. Run up pitch counts of opponents starters. Put up crooked numbers in multiple innings. All of it… why? Because it wins.
And it’s beautiful baseball to watch!

Can we all just agree that if you’re playing college baseball at ANY level, you’re a pretty good player. It’s so hard to actually play college baseball in today’s world.
"Guys that will live by that are the same guys that will run balls out."
I asked Terry Francona why he says he likes this group so much. His answer started with a small thing that he believes is at the core of the team's culture.
The first things scouts and recruiters look at?
Bodies.
Your body advertises if you're a JYD in the weight room or lazy.
Your body is your billboard.
What does it say about you?
Last out of the Pirates 2-1 loss last night. Oneil Cruz is doubled on a LD to SS. This happens way too frequently. Why?
1) Most often the cue to the base runner is “freeze” on a line drive verses “go BACK on a line drive.”
2) Not enough live game speed reads during BP.
I’m really disappointed in Lloyd Acosta. He has manipulated his way thru that program with many coaches. You think he would have learned after what happened at UC Davis. Lloyd I’m extremely disappointed in you. Your lacking Character and integrity. You’re the problem Lloyd.
One of my favorite videos, I’ve posted this a couple times. All players should watch, listen and implement!! Games hard, ups and downs, the ones with great demeanor, don’t get too high or too low will find success…..
"If you're results driven, if you care about your results, and you're losing sleep over results, you won't perform in this game."
Jonathan India hit .202 in June. But he started July with a grand slam. A good minute with India after today's game. #Reds
