In coaching in Texas for 30 years a key driver of program success isn’t just having superior athletes. IMO having a vertically aligned, structured, disciplined junior high/middle school program is critical. Otherwise you spend 2 years playing catch up to those programs that do.
If you can’t coach middle schoolers, then you just can’t coach.
Coaching people that are already good at everything and want to get better is easy.
Coaching people that have the coordination of a newborn gazelle is hard, and if you don’t control the room, they’ll burn it down.
“When the head coach is screaming at the defense “SPRINT TO THE BALL”…don’t disagree with Coach…even though that’s the wrong thing to say. Just pull the guys aside and say “hey look like your sprinting but really run under control to the ball….that’s how you get kids to play fast”

This may he an unpopular opinion, but if I was a Head S&C Coach with enough room to hire former players I would. Not to help me "coach," but to help me "translate" why every thing we are doing has an application to the field and their position. I think it would drive purpose.
The weight-room is special because it only rewards those that work. It values tenacity over talent. It doesn’t care about ⭐️’s or playing time. It’s a sanctuary where athletes aren’t subject to scrutiny from the outside world. The weight-room is a equal opportunity equalizer.
🚨HIGH SCHOOL TRACK IS CHANGING 🚨
Athletes are more educated than ever
Having basic/no knowledge or experience as a coach isn’t good enough
Just bc you “ran in HS/college” isn’t enough
Kids/parents are more likely to go leave HS if needs aren’t met (aka club/private)
Being strong in the weight room doesn’t make this athlete’s jump shot better. But it makes her stronger in her sport.
Not many girls can heave a turnaround 40 footer to tie the game. Nor can they press plates. Being strong isn’t the end all be all, but it sure helps.
