For those fans who maybe haven't heard from him besides quick TV interviews or don't know much about him, I have to give Kentucky baseball head coach Nick Mingione his flowers.
He demonstrated how to lead his team and still be respectful to everyone (opponents, media, staff, everyone) and gracious in defeat. He gave an emotional motivational type speech after losing in the championship game and the way his players spoke about him made it very evident what kind of man he truly is.
It's also clear he has his players best interests in mind, both on and off the field. He's a coach who loves the craft for the relationships and molding young men part of it above all else.
Kentucky fans, your program is in great hands with him at the helm (he wins, too). And Kentucky media, enjoy covering him.
In a sports climate full of the opposite, it's nice to also have a Nick Mingione.
I will never understand the regional hosts in the NCAA baseball tournament being the visiting team in the 1-0 vs. 1-0 games. Being at home should mean the advantage of being the home team in those games.
Heck a of a win for @UKBaseball, beating West Virginia 11-9 to get into the driver's seat in Morgantown.
Ethan Hindle knocked in three runs and Braxton VanCleave had a massive home run early on.
Baseball is really hard. It’s even harder when you aren’t accountable for your self and training. Make preparation your identity to the point everyone’s first comment about you is how you prepare to play.
Walk-off jack 🚨. JT Ritchie @JTRitchie1015 launches 3-run home run to left with 2-on and 2-out in the bottom of the 7th to give Henry Clay @HCHSbaseball26 a 6-4 win over Lafayette in the 11th Region ⚾️ Tournament. Video courtesy HCHS parent. @HCHS_Athletics
Parents at the field this morning:
Your son is watching you more than you realize. The face you make after a strikeout. The energy you bring after an error. The way you talk to him between games.
He will remember the tone of your weekend longer than he remembers the result.
Final. No. 23 Henry Clay @HCHSbaseball26 2, No. 6 Sayre 0. @JTRitchie1015 pitches a complete game shutout and escapes a bases loaded jam in the 7th as @BlakeMiniard snags a liner at 1B for a double play to win the 42nd District ⚾️ Championship
You’re performance isn’t your identity, your preparation should be your identity. Preparation is a reflection of who you are and what you’re trying to become. The path will end, but the preparation will teach you how to survive beyond the game.
"Accountability is the greatest form of love.
It's doing what you say that you are going to do.
We call it 'coach fed - player led'.
Our job as a staff is to set the ground rules and the core values of the program but each individual team - it belongs to the players."
Jaxon Jelkin completes the 128-pitch complete game. A magnificent performance as the Gators loaded the bases in the 9th, but Jelkin finishes it off in a 4-2 win. Kentucky is now 12-14 in the SEC. Massive win. Another rubber match coming tomorrow!
To sport moms:
The ones who sacrifice their weekends, sleep, gas money, quiet mornings, and personal space so we can chase our passion.
You drive, wash, pack, cheer, pay, wait, worry, and somehow make it all happen.
We play the game, but you’re the reason we get to.
"Your value is embedded in the action that you take to have the team have success.
Whatever role you have, we actually all have the same role and that's to help your team win.
How you impact and how you show up is everything."
