As a former NFL Scout—

I decided to sleep on it before posting my reaction to Sonny Styles debut.

I’m not disappointed, because this is what I expected. This was the norm on his Ohio State game film. This is why I put a 4th round pre-draft grade on him.

I sat there and watched Styles on the opening drive against Miami. It was hard to tell if he was even on the field.
I never even heard his name called during the telecast.

According to ESPN, Styles was credited with 1 solo tackle. But make no mistake about it, Miami ran the ball down his throat with runs of 5, 14, 5, 6, 7, 6, 3, 1, 1 yards on the opening drive (the two one yard runs were by the goal line when he clocked out on the edges). He didn’t attack the line of scrimmage. I wasn’t impressed with how he “took on blocks.” At best, he played the role of a “damage control run defender” (which are players who only get involved when they have to and/or they get involved once the action reaches where they are).

—and the worst sign of the night
was how he looked playing “Goal Line Defense.”

He looked like he couldn’t care less.

How did he look in pass coverage?

Below average-to-average by league standards. He looked somewhat reactive and ran around.

Overall—

There was nothing that looked dominant about Styles. Zero. His energy level was lethargic. His body language was bad. He looked reactive. He was just went through the motions.

The video of the opening drive is attached.

They built this guy into being some sort of monster with hype videos at training camp, but I knew better, I knew he didn’t have it in him, I did the work on him at Ohio State (30 games total), and I tried to do everything I could to prevent him from being overdrafted for the sake of everyone involved, most of all his, but here we are.
