In this piece, Magdalene Naa Momo Mensah examines whether a transition can be considered truly democratic when meaningful political choice is constrained.

Happening in an hour!
Join us for our side event at the 2025 Electoral Integrity in Africa Summit, taking place at the InterContinental Hotel, Lusaka.
Our discussion explores a key paradox in Africa: While citizens overwhelmingly support free and fair elections as the best way to choose their leaders, confidence in the integrity of those elections continues to decline.

📊 According to several reports from specialised organisations, more than 50% of elections in sub-Saharan Africa 🌍 are undermined by the following factors:
✅ Authoritarian backsliding
✅ Pre- and post-electoral violence
✅ Restrictions on civic freedoms
✅ Lack of transparency
🔍 In light of these challenges, civic technologies (civic tech) have emerged as powerful tools to strengthen democracy, restore public trust, and ensure more credible and inclusive electoral processes.

Impact Thursday!
Promoting peaceful and credible elections and strengthening election administration and processes in Ghana and Africa.
The Center formed the Coalition Of Domestic Elections Observers (@CodeoElections) in the year 2000 to enhance civil society participation in the election and promote electoral transparency and fairness. CODEO has trained and deployed over 10,000 election observers in Ghana, and it remains the only citizen observer group that deploys the parallel vote tabulation (PVT) in election observation in Ghana.
CODEO has contributed to relatively peaceful elections with 3 turnovers in government, a rare feat in Africa. Over the last 22 years, CODEO has observed every public election in Ghana, including by-elections.
This experience and capacity have been deployed across Africa, where CDD-Ghana regularly provides technical support to other citizen observation groups in Africa.

Why has support for elections dropped higher among Ghanaians living in rural areas than those in urban areas? What does this potentially mean for electoral participation, especially among rural dwellers?
These are critical questions Prof. John Osae-Kwapong (@Ata_John1), a D&D Fellow at the Center, poses in his latest blog post, 'Rural-Urban Gaps in Election Attitudes.'
In this blog post, he addresses topics including trust in the Electoral Commission of Ghana (@ECGhanaOfficial), voter turnout, and @afrobarometer data on elections.
