On this date just last year, we were setting the stage for a blizzard with brutal wind chills to follow in a couple days across the area. Frigid air dropped the high to only 2 above zero in Sioux Falls with readings north of I-90 below zero. 🥶 What a difference a year makes!
You ever thought, "you know what, I'd love to have two 1AM's in one night?" Good news! On Saturday night, most of us will be turning our clocks back one hour at 2AM! While setting clocks that don't do it on their own, change your smoke detector & NOAA Weather Radio batteries too.
Strong to severe storms will be possible tomorrow ahead of an advancing cold front. Bowing segments may lead to damaging wind gusts. Aside from this, could also see some isolated large hail and perhaps a tornado or two. We encourage you to remain #WeatherReady!
FYI, the NWS in Sioux Falls will be doing a couple unscheduled routinely weekly weather radio tests during the middle of the day Friday.
While there is no risk for severe weather, your weather radios may show an advisory light or could sound an alarm as the test is attempted.
Conditions in Minnehaha County are now rapidly deteriorating, and most roadways are impassable including HWY 38. No travel in Minnehaha County is advised. If your become stranded you will be facing a potentially life threatening situation.
Still some extremely dangerous road conditions out there in parts of northwest IA late this morning. Be sure to check on road conditions BEFORE heading out to travel!
In terms of amounts, here is a look at the potential for exceeding 2 and 6 inches of snow.
