Physicians for Human Rights Israel has warned that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, is now in immediate danger of being killed in Israeli occupation custody. His lawyer, Nasser Odeh, who visited him on 2 July at the underground Rakefet interrogation facility inside Nitzan Prison, said he barely recognized him. Dr. Abu Safiya was brought in shackled hand and foot, flanked by masked guards, his head, eyes, ears and neck covered in fresh injuries. He struggled to breathe and speak, could not sit upright without nearly collapsing, and seemed close to losing consciousness, too frightened to speak freely.

He told his lawyer that after his Supreme Court appeal was heard in June, guards entered his solitary cell and beat him with a hammer and batons, and that since his transfer to Rakefet on 24 June he has been beaten daily to the point of repeatedly losing consciousness, with no medical care. He said plainly: this is the last time you will see me, they brought me here to kill me. Held since December 2024 under the occupation's "Unlawful Combatants" law, without charge or trial, Dr. Abu Safiya saw his beatings escalate sharply only after he legally challenged his detention, and both his lawyer and PHRI are demanding his immediate transfer, an independent medical examination and his release, warning that any delay could cost him his life.

One thousand days of bombs. One thousand days of displacement. One thousand days of families counting every drop of clean water, every loaf of bread, every breath.

One thousand days of children learning the sound of a drone before they learn the alphabet. Of mothers rationing rice by the handful. Of fathers digging through rubble with bare hands, praying the silence underneath isn't final.

100,000 Palestinians killed. 1.9 million still surviving in tents - through scorching summers, freezing winters, disease, hunger, and a grief the world keeps scrolling past.

And still - Gaza refuses to disappear.

For most of the 1,000 days, The Sameer Project has kept showing up. Hot meals when kitchens shut down. Clean water when the taps ran dry. Medical care in tents where hospitals once stood. Dignity where the world offered silence.

We've been there on day 200, day 500, day 700, and we're still here on day 1,000. But the need has never been higher, and our funding has never been lower. Community kitchens are closing. Aid is shrinking. Hunger is creeping back into tents we fought to feed.

The world failed Gaza for 1,000 days.

Very sad to learn that Mona Khalil died after weeks in the ICU following an Israeli strike that levelled her home in Mansouri. She was a very well-known environmental activist and dedicated her life to saving endangered turtles. She stayed in the south despite Israeli strikes because of her love for the land.

She was a civilian, a renowned figure but Israel targeted her house.
