Her name is Namrata Macwan, and she works as an ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) supervisor in Gujarat

Macwan would make her team stay back after work to disparage Hindu deities by calling them "stones", distribute Bibles and make them watch faith-healing videos

Once, under the guise of field work in Vadodara, she took them to an actual gathering where pastors were giving sermons on superiority of Bible and people were giving testimonies of how conversion changed their lives

When her team members tried to leave, she threatened to withhold their salaries

Finally, last year, one of the members filed a complaint against Macwan at Khambhat Rural Police Station, describing a series of such incidents between 2022 and 2024

FIR was filed under Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act (or anti-forced conversion act)

After investigating her activities and financial transactions, police wrote in chargesheet that Macwan and her family are members of Jehovah's Witnesses, actively seek converts and they had received Rs 30 crore from the organisation for conversion-related activities

Recently, Macwan filed for bail in Gujarat High Court

Macwan's lawyer argued that as a member of Jehovah's Witnesses, she had a fundamental right under Article 25 of the Constitution to propagate her faith

High Court rejected it

Court observed that the constitutional right to propagate religion does not extend to conversions brought about through force, fraud or coercion

The case is under trial at a sessions court

Now imagine if there were no state anti-forced conversion laws. How would such crimes even be brought to trial?

This week, Maharashtra became the 13th state to enact a Freedom of Religion law

At the same time, several petitions seeking to repeal or dilute such laws, including those filed by organisations such as Jamiat, the Catholic Bishops' Conference and Teesta Setalvad’s, are pending before Supreme Court

@sewanyaya, along with our legal partner @NetworkforJus, have intervened in these proceedings, enabling 18 interventions petitions by actual victims of forced conversions

We are awaiting the next hearing

On ground, we are continuously spreading awareness about conversion tactics and these laws so people can use them and states that don't have the law yet, must introduce it

The Commonwealth Games is becoming a daily roll-call of young Indians who have emerged from unimaginable hardship & horrors to win gold.

Look at 23-year-old judoka Asmita Dey, who is now the first Indian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s 48kg category.

7 months ago, she lost her father to a brain stroke. A bicycle mechanic who earned barely ₹300 a day, he raised his family in a mud house in a small village in Tripura. When a knee injury threatened Asmita’s career, he found the money to take her to Delhi for treatment.

Even as the family mourned, Asmita’s mother urged her daughter to return to training, believing that abandoning the dream would betray everything her father had sacrificed for.

She now stands on top of the Commonwealth Games podium with a gold medal around her neck.

MEET 23-YEAR-OLD ASMITA DEY 🇮🇳🥹

Born in a small village in Tripura, Asmita is the daughter of a bicycle mechanic who struggled every day to provide for his family.

They were so poor that they depended on ration cards just to put food on the table.

When 12-year-old Asmita left home after being selected in a talent search, her father folded his hands before her coach and made just one request:

“Sir, we’re very small people. Please help my daughter become someone.”

That one sentence became her life’s purpose.

She spent years away from home, travelling for days to compete, often without confirmed train tickets, chasing a dream that seemed impossible.

Then, heartbreak struck ❤️‍🩹

Just days before qualifying for the Commonwealth Games, her father passed away after suffering a brain stroke.

She flew home, performed his last rites, and quietly returned to training.

Today, with tears in her eyes, Asmita Dey fulfilled her late father’s dream by becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games Judo Gold Medallist. 🥇🇮🇳

He couldn’t be there to watch her stand on top of the podium.

But every step she took was for him.

Some victories are far bigger than medals.
